RE: Howard Engineering - Kwik Fli III – Build
After completing my FK SBA 60 Speeda build here http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_7510820/tm.htm I thought I would start the New Year out right by completing some projects that have been in the shop queue.
I flew the Kwik Fli III quite a bit and it is a real joy to fly. Especially the historic and nostalgic aspect that I built it in 1974, Kraft radio, etc. Unfortunately after a while it developed a fuel weeping problem in the fuel tank stopper. Not a quick thing to fix the way the nose gear is installed so I put it up on blocks in the hanger and now I’m going to refurbish it and get it back into flight status.
My “to do” list:
1. Fix the tank leak and engineer a better tank mount that will make it easier to fix the tank in the future.
2. The Irvine carb is stuck from sitting.
3. The nose gear got fuel on the strut bearing and is sticky.
4. The Nicads that I installed in March 2004 need replacing and I’ve ordered a new Kraft TX and Kraft RX set from Batteries America.
The first steps were taking out the engine, battery, receiver, disconnecting the air lines to the nose gear and the control valve, nose gear and finally the tank.
View of the tank removed. Not the most clever way of routing the fuel lines but it seemed like a good idea in 1974!
To be continued….

The nose gear is a Rohm firewall mount so the tank lines had to be routed around the vertical air cylinder. This arrangement made it difficult to tighten the fuel tank stopper screw and or remove the tank.

Because the air cylinder goes through the middle of the mount I decided to drill offset holes for the tank lines and move the front of the tank over to one side. This eliminates the bending of the brass tank lines.
