I have a OS61RF Hanno Spec in an LA1 that I have been flying since '92. I started having problems with the engine and sent it in to Hobby services to have it checked out. They replied by saying that it seemed like a pump problem but since parts were not available they could not work on it.
I'm thinking that maybe i should just go ahead and get a new engine.
Question: Should I just go ahead and replace this 20 year old engine, with what, or should i try to get it worked on somewhere.

I have run a Hanno for 1500+ flights with the original pump and carburetor. I have run 7 different Hannos, most with more than 500 flights. Never a pump problem. If you have a fuel filter before the pump inlet nipple then you shouldn't have any problems. I did start having problems with my first Hanno (the 1500 flight one). After taking everything apart I discovered that an eccentric groove had worn into the needle valve. I swapped for a new needle and the engine ran fine.
What is the nature of the problem with your engine? How many flights on it? What is the condition of the piston/sleeve?

I have 5 Hanno 61's two of which have almost 1000 flights. If the piston and liner get worn or if the case starts leaking air your engine will seem like the pump is bad. I have worn out a piston and liner and crank and bearings but never a pump. I always run Morgan Cool Power all synthetic. The pumps do not seem to like the thicker caster oils in some fuels. Hope this helps.
I am building a Ron Chidgey Tiger Tail original for SPA type flying and wish I could use a Hanno in that. Would be WOW!!!

Aside from Hobby services, I'm not sure where to send your engine for repair. A good question for a post on RCU. I know there are people out there who do good repair work, but I don't know who they are.
I do have a question regarding the pump: do you flush it with methanol once a year ( during the winter or ever)? I always do it with my pumps if I'm not going to fly the airplane for mpre than a month. Then I connect a piece of fuel tubing from the pump inlet nipple to the out let nipple, effectively sealing the pump. This prevents accumulation of fuel residue 'gummming' up the pump. You may also have a scratch in the liner/sleeve which is compromising the piston/sleeve fit causing lose of compression which usually manifests as erratic needle setting and poor idle. Also hot starts a re very difficult.
Sorry, I'm not really helping, but without the engine in hand it is pretty tough to diagnose problems. I have done all my own engine work since I was a kid, back in the '60s. My dad encouraged it and I enjoy it. The Hanno Special is one of my all time favorite engines: loads of power and very user friendly!

I never did flush the pump. That may be the problem.
I had lost interest in flying this plane until this year so it just sat in the basement ignored. I had forgotten what a thrill it was to fly.
I just had rotator cuff surgery so I won't be flying for a while and want to give this plane an overhaul. New servos, retracts and a reliable Hanno Spec.
Anyone know of someone that works on these engines?

12-12 apc designed to run at 9600rpm 10% or 15% nitro, timed and ported different than the .61rf-p's the 6p carb actually has a smaller throat than the 86 that come on the rf-p's.

I apologize in advance for sidetracking this thread, but, out of curiosity, what prop does the OS .61 RF-P like, and what can it turn? The reason I'm interested is because I have my Tower Hobbies .61 spinning an APC 11x10 at 11,200rpm with the stock muffler (which is actually a tuned muffler). Today I'm going to tach an APC 11x11 if I can. If it breaks 10,000 I'll be very happy.

11-8,9,10 FOR THE RF-P&SF-P'S I BELIEVE, NOT SURE OF THE RPM'S, HAVENT RUN ONE IN YEARS, i LIKED MY HANNO'S BECAUSE THEY SEEM TO HAVE MORE CONSISTANT POWER ALL THE WAY ROUND.
IF YOUR RUNNING A CONVENTIONAL PIPE IT WILL NEED TO BE RE-TUNNED WITH THE CHANGE OF THE PROP.

I tached my Tower .61 at 10,250 on an APC 11x11 today with 10% nitro. That's with the stock muffler that came with the engine.
I am eager to get this thing in the air and see how it flies my plane with the 11x8, 11x10 and 11x11, since that is the real test.

My 2 Cursors both had Hanno 61's and my Boxer 60 had one also. They all ran between 10400 and 10600 with APC 12-12 narrow or APC 12-11 wides. I always ran Morgan Cool Power 15%. I did try 25% and did not see enough performance gain to spend the extra. Hope this helps. Still have a bunch of Hanno's and am putting the old Cursor back together. Just love that 2 stroke idle.

I only used 25% nitro fuel when the weather got hot. I'd get the same performance from the airplane as during cooler weather and I could run the engine a bit richer which helped keep it cool. The Hanno seems happy with anything from 10-25% nitro without having to mess with head shims or plugs to keep it running well. A great engine!!

Pete....If interested....I have a brand new Hanno.61 complete with stock header in the box. Never run. It was mounted one time i believe to set a firewall on a Conquest 7.
Paid $340 for it in 1993. Will sell $250 firm plus shipping...Or i can put it on e-bay for $350 and sell it pretty quick...Would rather sell it to a modeler that will truely use it and run it properly. I think i have a pipe also.

Back to the original pump question. You should try taking out the plastic piece in the pump and simpy turn it around and put the pump back together. This worked like a charm for me with one of my Hanno's.
I will reiterate that this engine is the easiest to use, most powerful engine in my hobby experience. Wonderful piece of work.
