Just found a Tiger Tail! PICTURES!!!
Just bought (stole, hehe) a consignment Tiger Tail with fiberglass fuse from a LHS. It was right there hanging from the ceiling! It needs restoration, but looks to be straight. Gonna remove the retracts and replace them with fixed gear and seal up the pipe tunnel. I guess I will get an OS 91 Surpass for it. I'll post pictures when I get home tonight.
Anyone have any pictures of Tiger Tails?

RE: Just found a Tiger Tail!
Dave: I built two TIGERTAILS for SPA Competition this winter.....can't find out how out to attach the
pictures here.....let me go to the bottom where it says..."click to upload images" will try that...
Computer said the UPLOAD went OK...hope so. I think you'll like the TIGERTAIL...these fly
nicely with OS 91 4S engines, fixed gear. Ron Chidgey emailed me after seeing the photos...
"makes me wanna build another one". He's been promising to get active in SPA Precision
Aerobatic competition, maybe he will this season.
Best wishes with the TT.

RE: Just found a Tiger Tail!
Nice looking planes! I'm hoping this one isn't a "later" model. I'd like to try and fly SPA next year. When I post the pics later tonight, maybe I'll get some insight to the legality of the plane.

RE: Just found a Tiger Tail!
Here are a few pictures. Everything seems to be in great shape. Retracts are very solid. Something is telling me to keep them in there and pipe a .61 and go ballistic! Any inputs or comments would be appreciated.

That plane is set up for a rear exhaust engine with a pipe. It would only be fitting to keep that set up for the future..... since it already has the added inner structure inside the fuse to do so. Yes, the os 61fx will do fine with that plane until a rear exhaust engine can be purchased. Correct me if I am wrong but that looks like the Tiger Tail 4

I agree with the above reply, looks like a Tiger Tail 4. Richard McFarland was doing a build on a TT 4, if you get in touch with him he can probably help determine if it's a 4 or an earlier version. His build thread is a few pages back.

Well Dave,
Some people have all the luck. Regular people wouldn't be able to go into ANY LHS and find a great looking plane like that. I'm looking forward to seeing pictures of the refinished plane as well, and also, I'd love to hear how it flies.
Fly safe and have fun!!

Kewl!!
Another Vote for 2 Stroke and Go Ballistic!!
Rear Exhaust!!
YS's can be found on e-bay..(Hey Wait..I don't wanna be bidding against you..he he)
Who was that...Rossi/Nova(I think) that had a pretty nize lookin FIRE 61...There was some discussion in a thread I had going..."Bridi Escape Powerplant"...I think I figured out since it's not imported to the US though it may cost some bucks??
Sooo..If "I" were lookin to power that thing...Hummm...Let me think a minute....Yeah....Jett!!
Have Fun...
Chuck
P.S. I have no ties to Jett...I just want one too..he he...Seems lately I've been on a Jett soap box or something..he he

Dave,
You really should put a FIRE .61 back into the plane as that is what it was designed for. Same goes for the retracts... you hit that switch one time and the kid behind you goes "WOW" and you'll know why you did it. I can't think of a better way to ruin a Tiger Tail than to put a 91 four stroke in it. Simply wasn't designed for it. By the way... saw your earlier post on how to install the servo linkage...I have a copy of the old Southern Pro mechanical retracts installation booklet in .pdf form I'd be happy to send you.. Just send me an e mail at [email protected] and I'll send it to you. Refinishing the plane is a great idea.. just remember that sandpaper is your best friend...and when you get down to the original primer, that is "far enough"....Good luck with your project.

RE: Just found a Tiger Tail! PICTURES!!!
Hello Dave,
The plane described in this thread is definitely a Tiger Tail 4. I remember Ron Chidgey flying the prototype in the '83 team trials.
Back then it was "freshly" trimmed as he was describing a fix he'd just made to the loop trimming.
It sure does take a rear exhaust, in Ron's case a YS 60 (the old short stroke)
Keep it light, if I remember Ron's was barely over 8 lbs.
best of luck,
Dean Pappas

Looks like a nice find!
Keep the retracts, you can always keep 'em down fro SPA. The rear exhaust/tuned pipe is another story.
I think the OS .61FX with a Jett muffler will be all you need power-wise.

RE: Just found a Tiger Tail! PICTURES!!!
To be fair with the SPA rules... it seems this is a 1980+ model plane, so I'll use this one for BPA when I get down to the Southeast next year. I'm going to keep the retracts, and I won a new Rossi Speed .60 with Tuned Pipe, NIB for cheap. The pipe will run down the side of the plane , so I'll fill the existing pipe cutout. I would go with a Karl Mueller wrap-around header, but I fear it would be too long to get to the sweet spot with the tuned-pipe.
I have a Troublemaker kit I'll build and put my OS .61FX or get a Tower, HP, K&B, etc... .61with a Jett muffler to fly with the SPA boys.
About to start the refurb.
