Default What pattern planes had tuned pipes inside fuse?

I'm going to fulfill a 30-year dream soon and build a Curare with retracts and a piped Rossi 60. But I recall my flight instructor back in the day was building a pattern ship that used a rear-exhaust 60 with the tuned pipe integrated into the fuselage. I'd also like to build and fly one of those at some point. Please let me know which "ballistic era" pattern planes used this design feature. Thanks.

Arrow
Magic
EU-1A
Brushfire (modified)
T-2A

These all had pipes on the top.

Later in the late 80's and early 90's most planes had pipes enclosed in the belly pan

Bridi's XLT and Escape both had the pipe inside the canopy which counts, I guess.

Mark,

A friend of mine had an EU1A that did. The Persuasion did as well, but I'm not sure when it was produced. I know there are others and I'm sure the pattern guru's here on RCU can help you more than I did.

Happy Holidays

Geez, I must type slow, because there were four responses before I could get mine typed..

Are those all yours? Very nice renditions of all three.

Mike,
I see you've been frequently visiting this classic forum. Does this mean you're catching the bug?? It would be a real treat to see you at an SPA/BPA meet sometime soon... any plans?

Mike,

The Brushfire and the EU1-A were built by Rick Hanson of Norfolk, Virginia. I did own the EU1-A until it fell victim to the dreaded "Green Futaba PCM 512 receiver"disease. The T2A MK II is owned by Airbusdriver here on the RCU forum and was built by a guy in Georgia. I kit all three planes at Carolina Custom Aircraft.....Each of them have their own characteristics but all of them are definitely BALLISTIC.

Inside the fuselage:
Magic
Dick Hanson Dalotel (the early .60 sized version that Chip won the '84 Nats with)
Desire .60
Skymaster (Kato's plagiarism of the Magic)
Actually, the Magic and the Skymaster had the pipe seperated from the main fuselage by a plywood floor, then enclosed with a fiberglass top deck; the exhaust exited out the bottom of the fuselage via a heatproof tube.

Only the Dalotel and the original Desire had the pipe inside the fuselage, but I'm just nit-picking over semantics

Henry Piorun Equinox (circa 1985)had the pipe enclosed in the top of the fuselage. Picture is in this thread

Plane pictured has an OS Max 0.61VF with rear exhaust.

Southern Bootlegger, Tiger Tail III and Wolfgang Matt's Arrow (Similar to Atlas) were all pipe in fuse designs.

Really cleans up the plane's appearance, but heat and burned couplings, etc. were frequently a problem. Some, like Prettner's Magic had an exhaust extension that exited down and out the fuse bottom.

The Magic looks a lot like the Curare, but indeed has the pipe on top of the fuselage, then covered with a glass pan. You have to connect a heat proof tube to the stinger of the pipe, and run that through the fuselage. Exhaust is under the fuselage, which makes for a very clean plane even after an afternoon's flying. I already hate the day that something will let go - the glass pan over the pipe gets very hot, and I can imagine that the silicone couplers must suffer a lot as well.

Kind of a complicated header as well, by the way : engine is inverted, and pipe is on top of the fuselage deck.

Still, it DOES look good, having the whole pipe tucked away.

Kris
