RE: MK Beetle Build
Hello Everyone
Here are some pics of progress.
I have stuck on the belly pan clips and the front mounting point. The rear is held in place by 2 wire pins through self tapping eye bolts.
You might be able to see that there is stuff all clearance between the pipe and the wing skin and the pipe and the pan. The instructions say to cut the bottom wing skin for clearance then galss over the hole to make a scallop. I am not sure I am keen on cutting the bottom skin. What do you think?
Cheers
Tarquin

RE: MK Beetle Build
The plans of the Aurora ask the same procedure, grind a groove to the wing bottom skin for pipe clearance. After all components put into position, I decided not to open the bottom skin. There is enough room for the pipe. If the pipe is centered between wing bottom skin and belly pan maybe 1/4" space on both sides is there. I marginally ground a flat spot, and glassing the wing center section was a standard procedure anyway. I am using the red pipe for the OS .61RF Hanno Special, but I think it is same diameter as the other Hatori pipes for .61 engines.
Interesting to see that the belly pan is not enclosing the cylinder head on the Beetle design. It fully conceales the engine on the Aurora. Does anybody know if engine overheating was an issue with the Aurora?

RE: MK Beetle Build
I powered my Aurora with a YS91FZ. The tuned pipe is quiet thin compared to a 2 stroke pipe, therefore I did not how a grove in the underside of the wing.
The YS cylinder head pokes out the top of the cowl. Even with the small triangle air scoop in the front of the cowl, the engine always runs cool. There is a small amount of heat build up with the enclosed tuned pipe, but nothing extream.

Here you can see the obvious differences in height between the Aurora belly pan (Right) and Beetle Pans on the left.
Width is basically the same ,but the Beetle pans just a little narrower.
The beetle is definitely a more compact and refined Aurora, Basically. . . . . .

Of course, one thing to remember is that the Aurora is Naruke's creation whilst the Beetle is Akiba's. I'm not clear on whether they are direct contemporaries or if one taught the other. Maybe as Paul states, Akiba decided to refine Naruke's design.

RE: MK Beetle Build
Hello David
If the files are no longer available on the FTP I can re-upload them for you. I also took tracings of all the formers and die cut parts but have not scanned them yet. Let me know if you need anything.
Cheers

RE: MK Beetle Build
Tarquin,
Thanks for the tracings. My digital copy of the Beetle plan was a weird color pdf. I cleaned it up andhere's a very nice b&k 300 dpi version of the Beetle plan with seeable wing ribs.

RE: MK Beetle Build
David, guys,
the recent 4shared link provided by Tarquin is a copy of the plan only. Is there some other download I'm missing (probably should check the start of the thread)?
If not, would you mind posting his tracings here (or sending them via email) so that he doesn't have to do it yet again.
David.
Edit: Just went through the thread and there are no other download links for the parts.
