ATLANTA 60's FIRST FLIGHT IN YEARS
In November/December 2005 I bought an Atlanta 60. The history of the plane and its sister ship(Nathan King's Atlanta) have been written about in posts here earlier. After a rather extensive refurbishment the last couple of months, she flew day before yesterday. A couple of down clicks and one right aileron click and she flew hands off. Gordon McClean flew here maiden flight. He participated in pattern contests back years ago and still flies a couple old pattern planes(Brushfire being one). A nose wheel steering linkage failure aborted the second flight at takeoff. A minor setback. More flights to follow. Below are pics of before flight, takeoff and landing

Fantastic!!! Well Done Sir!!! I've been anxiously awaiting this news...
Beautiful job on the refurbishment...I'll probably be following your lead when the time comes to set mine up as well...Looking forward to that day...
So the AR is a good match for the Atlanta??
Good Deal...

Hey, congratulations! What happened to the nose gear linkage? I've never had a problem with this and am curious to know what failed. You're still using that nose gear retract rod reminescent of a Rube Goldberg invention like me huh? I really can't think of a better way to snake it around the tank area.
I may be grounding mine for a little while. I need to repair a few very small (hairline and less than 1/4" long) cracks sprouting up near the nose before they get bigger; they're probably from engine vibration. My belly pan had a few small cracks when I got it (looks like it may have been belly landed on grass once in the past), so I will be repairing those as well. I don't know what paint Roger Young used on them, but I don't think you could damage the paint job with a key! It's like automotive paint laced with titanium!

What happened to navav2002? I recognized the city, Cartersville, but not the new name.

Just wait till it comes time for me to start painting my airplanes...Yall are gonna be saying..."Hey..his paint job looks just like mine..."
So is the AR good match?? Do you have plenty of power?? What prop were you running?? Did it do OK off the grass?? I'm flying primarily off a grass field too so I'm curious... (I plan to join GMA soon which has a paved runway but I won't be able to fly there that much...)
Boy that's a good looking plane...
Thanks...

The Atlanta does well off both grass and pavement. I think it's easier to fly off grass, but my field is paved and it works almost as well there too.

Master Airscrew 11X7.5 prop. The grass was no problem. That was the AR's first flight. Another guy took off just as we did with a noisy(if you can believe that) four-stroke. Half the time we could not hear the engine. But Gordon flew several vertical pattern maneuvers and it pulled right through them. I like the grass for landing as the plane will slow very nicely on roll out. Plus, with the T2A, I once had a main gear stick up(slightly bent landing gear wire). I landed on the grass runway with all gear up without a scratch. A few grass streak stains on the fuse bottom, but that was it.
