If your an AMA member you can log onto the AMA Members section then click on the digital archive link. Enter the archive then search for the Nov or Dec AMA magazine. It starts from 1978 and goes to 2000. AMA Magazine lists it every year. This is the nats winners from 1978 and looks like this:

Here's the rest of what I could gather. Thanks to Chip Hyde, Jim Kimbro, Jim Hiller and the AMA Archives... here's 79-08. Most of it should be right, but there's probably some mistakes in places.

It must have been '81 when I asked Tony Bonetti for some take-off/landing help with my Tri-Squire. I know he was the reigning National champion at the time. I was fresh out of high school.
