Aurora - Great pictures ! D. Brown and Sally. The last time I was at Dave's house, he had a new or slightly used Curare hanging on his basement wall. I saw a picture someone took when touring the AMA Headquarter's, and one is hanging there, it may be the same one.

Vince,
Was there anyone else that used Dave's color scheme of the big checker pattern on the wings?
I remember seeing that alot in the 80s magazines. I'm wondering if it was always Dave? If it was, that guy was everywhere.

DM. I spent a lot of time in his basement, building Phoenix', 1969 - 1971. His checkerboard was the only one I had seen at that time. Recently at the Chattanooga SPA contest, I saw several variation's of it. Even one plane, painted almost the same colors.

Back then, I only did the contest trail for 2 years, there may have been more. Here is a couple from that contest, and my two under the canopy. The RWB Curare, is Ed Lyerly's electric plane, same scheme. You should see his electric's fly. First time for me to see that method, I was impressed. Ed Hartley's Curare is on the left, flew like it was on rail's.

I have a few '70s issues of American Aircraft Modeler, the checkerboard seemed to be pretty popular on the wing lower surfaces.

My eye wasn't trained very well back then. Every plane I saw w/ that scheme I considered a Phoenix. My best friend in high school scored a built one (I know what it was because of the checkerboard pattern ) and never flew it. I wonder if he still has that???[sm=rolleyes.gif]

Yes it is, and it was a bit humiliating being taken by an 8 year old. I was there in Novice at the 80 Nats atWilmington, Ohio, just a few places behind him with my Southern RC Bootlegger w/ Rossi .61 RE. The checkerboard pattern became popular, in a variety of colors, as a scheme thanks to DB. It was a great week with a lot of great flying. If you were watching Chip's plane you'd never imagine the pilot was this little kid (I was 23 anyhow and he was little). Been out for too many years but looking forward to returning, especially to the SPA ships.

Actually, I believe that Dave "borrowed" that scheme from flying buddy Bob Godfrey.
Bob published a neat twin-boom design with that scheme back in the mid '70s.

Actually the DB scheme was done by Dave Scully. Dave bought a Phoenix 5 from him in that scheme but was red or orange and white. DB did his subsequent models in the same scheme changing it to bronze and white and made the scheme famous.

Hi Mike,
I don't think your and my answers are mutually exclusive!
Now we have to ask the actors in the issue!
later,
Dean

OK Dean.... from one of the actors,
This photo was taken at Lancaster OH in 1973. From L-R Alan Dupler and his Triton (Phoenix derivative), Dave Brown P6, Don Lowe P6, and myself with Phoinix 5. Dave had the scheme at least in 1973. Mike is probably correct on the orgins of the scheme. Dave Scully was very cleaver so it's quite possible.

Hi Mark,

I believe Dave is holding a P-5, not a 6. And of course, also a can of Stroh's!

Mark, I believe that Alan Dupler's plane is the Trion rather than the Triton. We (Fliteglas) use to make the fuselages for him. Still have the original plug but not the molds.

Hi Ralph,

Hope you're doing well! Those days were a lot of fun! I have a NIB kit for a Trion in my garage rafters. If only I could get motivated to do some building. I remember practicing at Sonny Dupler's place with Harry Roe!

Yes Tony your correct it is a P5. Right after I sent the response I realized that. As I recall this was Don's prototype P6 and hadn't been released in a kit yet.

Vince,
I have asked around about Dupler and no one seems to know. I would like to see him and talk about the "good ole days!"

Mark, I remember Slater from Slater's Hardware was in the group. One year, we piled in the van that Dave bought from the guy up toward Lima, Ohio, Jerry Lucke's area. Harry Roe had a big fight with his wife when we went to pick him up. He also supplied us with his special, "Ucon Oil", fuel. It was clear as water. We went to Huntsville in that van that day, 6 of us, I forget where we slept, but it was tight. Imagine 6 of us, all had planes, clothes, flight boxes, and Dave always took two planes. Do you remember Mike Schafer, from West Virginia ? He gets on here sometime, his dad used to call for him.
He pilots his own twin something, as his personal plane, I think he is getting back in, maybe, but busy with the business side. I believe that modeling took him to the full scale side of flying.

You get down this way, put you up, I am right by A1A, right between Jupiter and Stuart. Kicking around some SPA, but not much in FL, and no luck getting anyone down here motivated for this. Getting to any contest from here, drive 550 - 1000 miles. Still married to same girl, 40+ years. May start snow birding in the near future, get another home up your way, Morgantown, WVa.

Ralph White...

You exist! I am a huge fan of your companies work including the Saturn, the Trion (top of my must have list) and the P-51 Mustang.

I just picked up a NIB Fliteglass P-51 deluxe kit and look forward to getting it on the bench. Where is Neoga, IL and would you consider coming to Chicago to fly?
