Curare 40 original MK kit
Have a Curare 40 original kit. Thinking of building it. I looked at the plan and it seems complicated. I am used to having a manual with plans this one does have one. Any suggestions.

start slowly, i can stare at my next move for a long time. between all of the help here and patience i'm sure you can do it. i dry fit most everything 1st then reassemble with glue. MK kits are the best i've ever seen, the fit is superb. just post lots of photos.[sm=teeth_smile.gif]

There are some basic assembly diagrams on the plans. David's advice is spot on. The parts fit is excellent. Please feel free to ask as many questions here as you need or want. There's lots of expert advice available and is disseminated freely .
I also have the MK 40 sized Curare kit which I can refer to if necessary.
Happy Building,

RE: Curare 40 original MK kit
Firts dumb question. The plan only has one wing. the right one how do you build the left wing? I was thinking that maybe to build the left wing on the plan and then flip over and it will fit fine? Am I correct? i will post pics once I get started. I had posted a thread amny months ago and some one asked that I make templates but I don't have the time and would really like to get this one going. Any suggestions on how to get the retratcts on and should it have flaps and air brakes aI see on the plan many things that I don't know if I like. It does not have a manual. Thanks for the help.

are your leading and trailing edges notched? that would help a lot. i've heard of flipping the plans and wiping on mineral oil to see the wing.

you could use a wing jig and transfer the spacing measurements from the right to the left side. i like to use jigs or a magnet system for everything possible.

Hey David,
You're a member!! That was easy!!
I've done the 'oiling the plans' trick a few times about 4 decades ago - messy and it ruins the plans. Copy the plans first if you go that route. The reverse image copy is the best option. You can also build one panel right side up (the 'right' one) and one upside down (the left one) on the available plan. I'm pretty sure the Curare 40 has a symmetrical wing so there shouldn't be any issues. Dry assemble and see if it looks ok.
Good luck,
Will

i looked at it again and think it is a bit too complicated for my skill level. I may sell it. How much do you think it is worth. Thanks

Richard,
if you decide to sell it well then no need but if you decide to build it, I'd be happy to produce a plan for you that allows you build the kit more easily. All that is needed is a full scale (100%) scan of the original plan (Kinko's). From that it is a little bit of work but quite doable to produce plans of any and all items as desired - the beauty of the digital age.
Here's an example of what can be done - in this case, the plan of the MK Magic 20:

Wow... looks like 107 downloads to date - I hadn't checked in a while.
David.
P.S. By the way, most all MK plans are one sheet and are laid out in a similar fashion often cutting off a piece of the tail or one wing/stab panel.

That's funny, I did pay 25 $ for mine 20 years ago. What is the consensus on using the parts as masters to duplicate? It doesn't appear that MK stuff is going to be rolled out again any time soon.

RE: Curare 40 original MK kit
Edit:
Well, so much for the original link I provided. The one below is now correct!
Roary,
If there is yet what could be called consensus, I'd say that there is an effort exactly along these lines. Personally, even though I haven't had much time lately to advance the project, I've only embarked on the 20 size kits and that in itself is an undertaking. With the great generosity and support of this forum and its memebers, hopefully, some of the 20 size classic kits will be restored - to a certain extent - to their former glory.
Full details can be found here: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_8963192/tm.htm
Of course, the kits will be "imperialized" to work with wood sizing in N.A. Unfortunately, the manufacturing of certain CNC routed wood blocks is apparently not tenable in today's market for the numbered kits that may be made as result of this project. So, while the object is to reproduce the vast majority of the kits contents, some items will be required to be shaped by the builder.
It would be interesting to see a similar effort go toward the larger sized kits.
David.

RE: Curare 40 original MK kit
Agreed on the larger size kits; it seems a shame to just build an MK anything without somehow securing the ability to repro. It's nice to see the vintage kit manufacturers putting out some neat stuff. Maybe it's just a few of us but the MK stuff was fun to build, all wood and all, not to mention they flew so well.
