RE: MK Curare ( You Know where)
in the seller's defense he asked here what the package was worth last week. i would sell the retracts and keep the kit if i bought the package. but i like MK kits.

Hi,
I had e-mail conversation with the seller and as I understand it he is very anxious the kit/box will be lost or damaged in the transport so it is probably why the shipping cost is sky high. And he also told me international bidders are welcome as long as the bidder has a contact in US he can then send the boxto, and the buyer will have to arrange shipment from there to his own country.

Jeff,
I totally agree that US $85 is very expensive shipping cost. It could be the reason you say, added profit. I have got big boxes (kits)shipped from US to Europe (Sweden) and usually it is max around US $50. I got a Dirty Birdy glass kit shipped to me from US some time ago and that box is rather large, it cost me US $54 in shipping cost. I would be surprised if a MK kit box would be more expensive then that to ship to me from US. But in this case with the MKkit it is shipping cost inside US borders so I can not imagine it will be as expensive as shipping overseas.

A couple of months ago I had a not so good quote from UPS. I needed to send some rolled plans in a tube to Ireland. They wanted $140[X(][:'(][:@]. That was for uninsured and no extras. USPS charged me under $20. Guess who got my business.

free bird, same as me. i ordered an OPS .90 speed engine [sm=tongue_smile.gif] from Mantua Models in Britain and unfortunately had to return it (it was shipped in the marine version). ups wanted similar money just for then engine, the pipe was 2 feet long (separately packaged). the pipe would have been more.
the post office shipped both packages for $35 or so.

I may add that USPS is not only cheaper, but actually faster than any other service. At least to Mexico. I have received numerous packages with no delay.

There definitly is added profit calculated in the shipping. In fact I just calculated a 48''x12''x12'' box weighing 20 pounds from NC to CA with $1000 insurance on UPS.com for $38.

Jeff,
I think you are wrong about the added profit. There's just a $50 - $60 handling fee.
Not knowing the dimensions of the kit box, postage to my location priority insured
for $500 on a box 42x5x18 at 15lbs is only $21, per the USPS postage calculator.
You could add a couple of bucks to cover possible unknown cost.

...to me...
I'm not a collectorin a true sense and I will probably not build this MK Curare NIB kit (I have another Curare short kit in transit to me from Eureka Aircraft that should arrive any day that I plan to build). So now I suppose I'm kind of a "collector" or first step toward that I guess. I have some other "vintage" pattern planes also like Top Flite Taurus NIB kit and Bridi Dirty Birdy glass NIB kit but the Dirty Birdy will be on the building bench and fly.

i agree. when i bought 2 super rare nib MK kits (Wild Beat, Silent .st) with nib MK retracts for $500 (+$50 to ship) i appreciated it too. and i wasn't judgmental either. [8D]

It takes an astute buyer to realize that these prices are actually less, adjusted for inflation, then when the kits and retracts were new.
Just heard on the business report that the dollar buys 13% less today than one year ago.
Foreign currency is killing the buck.

RE: MK Curare ( You Know where)
So I should expect a 13% cost of living raise???. Sorry, it's really a pretty sad fact. I'm sure Obama will address it......
By the way, that's why MK kit prices shot up 2 decades ago (or so); the value of the yen increased significantly against the dollar. As an example the original price of the Aurora remained the same in yen, but went from $125 to $260USD in just a few years - OUCH!
