Classic Pattern Event in Chicago...2010?

Rules, rules and rules...this is courtesy of the Ballistic Pattern Association (BPA) website which can be visited:

http://www.ballisticpattern.com/

Rule #1 Have fun!

Rule #2 Rules are used to make sure that participants have fun.

Rule #3 If it looks "Classic", you tell me that it is a "classic XYZ from 1971", powered by glow, electric or rubber...it will be eligible.

Rule #4 See Rule #1.

Certainly, scores will be awarded for each flight...the event is not really about the scores...it is providing an opportunity to see a bunch of cool classic models and a few classic pilots!

Hey John,

I really doubt I can make it, but thanks for the offer. I'm planning on a P7 when they come out. Gotta sell the P7 kit I got!

You still have that glass Dirty Birdy kit?

Hi Tony,

Sorry you won't be able to make it out, would have loved to see you fly the old style.

The P7 rocks and you will be happy I believe. I am hoping to have a complete retrct solution for us in them as well that will make you guys proud.

I let the glass Dirty Birdy kit go a couple of months ago. Was hard to pass up the $500 it fetched. Mike did a good job on the P7 and it is a quick build.

Classic Pattern Event in Chicago...2010?

"Classic Flying"...can be best experienced with a properly set-up airplane. The attached article is a contained in the June 2009 issue of the "Classic Pattern-Trader" written by Dave Guerin (copy provided by permission of the CP-T). The article discusses aircraft set-up, flight trimming and is the first of a series of articles available exclusively from the "Classic Pattern-Trader".

This is also an experiment to provide access to the "Classic Pattern-Trader"...

Classic Pattern Event in Chicago 2010!

Experimental Competition Class to be Debuted..."TOC/Prototype Pattern" class.

The "TOC/Prototype Pattern" class will use the rules from the 1978 Tournament of Champions, the first year that scale models were required to be flown. The manuever schedules from the event will be used which were very complex for the day but actually include many in the current AMA Pattern Advanced and Masters sequences and is less difficult than the IMAC Intermediate schedule.

Select a model flown in the 1978 TOC, add a .90 - 1.20 size engine or gear a couple of .91's lioke Hanno did and you are set. The Model Airplane News Akromaster is a simple and inexpensive model to build cover in film and flies very well. Other choices are the Dalotel, Bridi Hobby/Great Planes offered a Hanno Prettner version (SEE PHOTO) or the MK Akromaster and many more.

I will personally have the MAN Akromaster, the Bridi Dalotel which I received the original Great Planes Demo model and extra kit from my pal Don Anderson and I just acquired a Yellow Aircraft Cap 10B kit.

Make plans to attend, build an airplane!

Anyone have knowledge of a Don's Custom Models Super Chipmunk kit? I'm in the market. I think they were first used at TOC in '81...

Rusty,
Thanks for the pdf of the trim sheet. I'll use it tomorrow on my SoCal Kaos' 1st flight.
I bought the Kaos ARF and OS 55 as you suggested and sent it to the pad in St. Louis just tonight. Will there be any problem with using an old 72 radio at your field? I've got a nice, new T6XA Super that I'd like to use as my Midwestern rig.
My brother-in-law has been flying electric scale with John Bashore in Huntington Beach and found he had a Webra 120 and a pipe, which bro promptly bought for his Bearcat (I don't think he'll use the pipe). John had bought that set-up long ago for an old TOC entry that never was...
You guys know any active St. Louis area SPA/BPA/Pattern coach types? I'm new, low time and truly sucketh at this point.

Classic Pattern Event in Chicago...2010...who needs an airplane?

Although the event has not officially be approved by the incoming Board of Directors of the FVAC, I am confident it will "happen" and I imagine it will be in May or June.

Who needs a classic kit? The event will be sponsored by the "Classic Pattern-Trader" and per its' stated mission of promoting classic pattern, has come across a number of very special kits. Each kit is complete and is available to the friends of the "Classic Pattern-Trader" and available by appointment only at an extraordinary value.

(1) Cutlass Supreme kit NIB
(2) Bridi Dirty Birdy 40 kit NIB

If we assume a mid-May date (earliest due to the unpredictable Chicago weather) the event is less than (6) months away.

Stuntflyr- I am not familiar with any 72 mhz issues at the Fox Valley Aero field. Bill Ahrens is the most accomplished pattern flyer in the St. Louis area and he flies at, what I have called the "McDonnell Douglas" field, on the West side of the city.

BERUSTY,
Looking forward to the Chicago classic event, if just to get a look at Mups after 30+ years. Call it a pushing 55 almost senior moment, but how can/do we get to the "Classic Pattern-Trader"? And the McDonnell Douglas field, didn't there used to be a pattern (classic anyhow) contest there in the seventies/eighties? I know I flew my first TT there (and crashed it there too during a danged fun-fly event) it would spin like crazy and come out in split second. Thanks.

Classic PatternEvent in Chicago!

hook57- MUPS is one of the reasons pattern flying is fun hobby. The "Classic Pattern-Trader" is available by request, send me a (PM) via RCU.

Almost forgot another item the "Classic Pattern-Trader" has found for kit builders:

Tiporare epoxy glass fuselage...well below your wildest dream for a fine value!

Goals: The primary goal is to have lots of fun, sharing our passion for classic pattern airplanes. The event will have both Senior Pattern Association and Ballistic Pattern Association Classes celebrating and leveraging pattern models from the golden age of R/C precision aerobatics 1968 - 1985 (The Classic Pattern-Trader's definition).

Rusty,
I would like to come. Could you paint my name and AMA number on one of your planes for me? Matter of fact, I might want to have you repaint one of your planes in my scheme and colors. I just hate flying a plane that's missing these important details : )

2010 Chicago Classic Pattern Championships!

Question: Will Rusty provide custom airplanes for eligible participants?

Short answer: Bill, for you I will share the "heavy iron" including the Blue Angel, Arrow or the Tiporare. Unfortunately they will be finished in their World Championship color schemes (or as accurately the colors can be documented...the Blue Angel is very tricky).

Long Answer: In June of 2007, I had a mid-air with my Oxai Zeque, my primary model for the upcoming NATS, and although I landed the model, repairs would not be completed until winter 2008. Testament to the collection of great guys in the pattern community...I got a call from Bill Cunningham the Monday after the mid-air to say that he was going to air freight his Zeque for me to use for the NATS!

Longer Answer: Bill was a USA F3A Team member for (3) world champs 1985, 1987 and 1989 (?). In 1985 he flew a modified Bridi Escape called the Great Escape. Bill's changes included a larger spinner, different fin/rudder shape and (?...documented by Freebird in another RCU classic pattern thread). Last spring I found (2) Bridi Escape kits for Bill and I to re-create his 1985 WC model. I betcha mine will fly first (ha!)...I do need photos for the color scheme.

Favorite Bill Cunningham story: I believe Bill flew immediately after Hanno Prettner at the 1985 WC's...his eyes light up as he shares how amazingly smooooth Hanno flew. Come to the Chicago Classic Pattern Championships and here the story in person!

I was about to say. Holy smokes, that's QQ! What, at 18? I think he's exactly my age...

Actually, let's see... '88, he was 20-21. I believe he was born in '68, a little younger than yours truly. []

What plane is that?

Hanno anywhere that can be seen?

Time to go for some brews.

David.
