RE: Curare Build
Unfortunately, because of my camera, lighting and photography skills, the pictures of the parts after glass look the same as the pictures before! (I guess that's a good thing) I'll post a few shots before the weekend is up.
Feel free to post pics of your build in this thread, I'm not trying to keep it clean.

....This is my first experience with Piranha putty after Andy Kunz suggested it during my last classic pattern build thread (deception rescue). He's right, it blows bondo away.

Where did you find the Piranha Puddy? I haven't heard of it before.
TIA

you're still doing it.
It's a fine line though considering we feel free to promote, provide links to and discuss commercial products but don't condone posting links to items for sale, particularly if they are ours.
In any event, RCU policy aside, we probably all agree, personal build threads shouldn't serve others advertising purposes.
Sorry for the further contamination Mitch - back to your build.
David.

RE: Curare Build
All fiberglass work is now complete. The entire aircraft has also been painted in the 50/50 mix of poly and microballoons. This is what the nose looks like without any sanding. The nose ring still needs a little work.
My fears of the wing skins expanding due to the water based poly were unfounded, everything looks great. One coat of Minwax sanding sealer is enough to protect against this.
I'm ready for primer. I think I need a high fill sandable primer as you can still see a bit of the weave on the surface, especially on the wing.
Any suggestions on primer would be greatly appreciated.

i bought a sprayable reduceable automotive filler primer. sprayed it thick and then sanded it all off. then i sprayed a thin coat of nelson primer for the paint to adhere to.

One thing I learned about the KlassKote is there MAY be an adhesion problem if you put KK over non-catalyzed primer.
I like both the Nelsons and KlassKote epoxy primers.

RE: Curare Build
David,
I'm not sure yet, any suggestions?
Sanded the entire aircraft with 220 grit this afternoon. White powder all over the place. I don't even want to ask how toxic a powder of polycryllic/glass/microballoons is. It's looking pretty good.
Here's a pic of the final engine test fit. The opening still needs to be smoothed a bit.

Thanks, give me a ride in N495RD and I'll teach you everything I know!
(for those who don't know how to look up an N number, N495RD is a Lancair)

RE: Curare Build
If I am ever out in Kansas, I surely will. It is a blast to fly her, 210 MPH of fun. And I would love to build that good, compliments on that aircraft so far, it is looking wonderful. I cant wait to see the finished product. The Curare is a beautiful aircraft, and the one that I have flown flies beautifully. If you have never flown one before, you will love that one once you finish it.

RE: Curare Build
I haven't flown the Curare before, but I have flown Hanno's later design, Calypso. I trust that my Curare will live up to it's legacy.
btw, I work for the company that now owns the design of the modern version of the Lancair, the Cessna Corvalis. I look forward to the day that I can justify a "ride along". What a beautiful design. This is a case where engineering was put aside and pure aesthetics ruled with wonderful results. Sometimes, if it looks right, it will fly right.

Getting ready to fuel proof the firewall with epoxy. The engine mount screw holes are plugged with cut-down birthday candles. Works like a charm.
