That is really great! Thanks for sharing.

Anyone have any details on the Japanese entrant that was shown on the film? The airplane was named Shimo? Nice looking ship...

Sean,

The model was named "Froster" and the pilot was Kazuo Shimo. Placed 11th.

At the 1971 Internats Phil Kraft used his Fire Fli. I expect Ray can come up with some pictures.

Here's the page from the program showing the Japanese team and a little about Shimo and the "Froster."

Thanks for posting the pics of Kraft's Fire Fli. It's a slick looking model. Does anyone know if plans are available? I'd sure like to get a copy!

RCM&E did an article on the Firefly FB, RFJ will probably find which one before I can, but that fuselage is a hollowed balsa log, you got shares in a balsa factory? Nice model otherwise, but likely to suffer a bit against modern designs, high rudder position looks a good candidate for a bit of proverse roll etc. I have seen the mag plans, got them somewhere, certainly stand out on the flightline...

Most of the fuselages from that era were balsa logs, and that's one of the things that appeals to me. I like to carve and sand balsa, I get a lot of satisfaction from it. There's just something about shaping balsa into a fine flying machine! I hope that someone can offer up a set of Fire Fli plans.

FB - As Evan says the fuselage is, literally, supposed to be carved to shape from a solid block of balsa approximately 5"X4"X48". Once this is done it is then hollowed out to a wall thickness of 1/4". No thank you - if I were building it I would use the normal sides, big corner triangles and thick sheet top method.

The plan is available from www.myhobbystore.com (Plan RC/1127 but for some reason listed under "powered scale free flight") I have a copy bought years ago from RCM&E (plan/article published in the April 1972 issue) which you can certainly borrow to copy if you prefer. E-mail if interested.

Well, if you really want to do the carving X-List has the plans. But don't be in a hurry to get them as they are very slow.

Jon,

I am glad to say that X-List have recently been taken over by Myhobbystore so hopefully orders will now be dispatched much quicker.

That's good news Ray! When I ordered my set of RC1174 plans it took almost two months to get them and then I only received the fuse plan not the wing. The wing plan is available from AMA as it's the wing from the Dragon Fli as RCM&E points out.

Did you see the retracts on a couple of those airplanes and before 1976 imagine that.

Not so surprising Gary. Some competitors at the previous (1969) World Champs had used retracts ( Giezendanner, Shoenfeldt ) and, of course, Hal deBolt used them at the 1962 US Nationals in his Viscount III.

Fantastic film, it brought all those magazine articles I read back then at 14 into moving pictures and sound.
One thing thou, the team was Whittley,Chidgey and Kraft, I saw Norm Pages Mach1 twice in that film taking off and in the last half of a four point.
Was Norm 1st alternate in 71 and doing practice flights or something, I know he was in the 73 team but I wasn't aware the Mach 1 appeared that far back.
I built one in the 70's, the MAN construction article was June 73.
The other thing is does anyone know how to save that film on your hardrive from that Jap site or is there an English speaking site that has it also.
Cheers
Greg

Hey that's a great clip. It's nice to see those you've read about so many times in action. That clip
also bought back some good memories. The Korean flyer in this film is the guy who got me into
RC back in 73 when I was station in Korea (U.S. Army). A real nice guy who worked for the Army's
Arts and Craft shop system. He helped me build a Falcon 56 so I wouldn’t screw it up and taught
me how to fly, as well as film processing. The only part of his name I can remember is Kim. Quite a
few military types got their RC/Ukie start/wings thanks to this guy. I have a couple of photos of him
somewhere around here. I wonder what is he up to today? Thanks for the posting the clip and
thanks for the flashback..

Per Wikipedia, the site Daum is a Korean site and not Japanese as some first thought.

The only South Korean entrant at the 1971 WCs was called Tae Sik Kim. This is him talking with Lou Penrod. He flew a Dragon Fli with an Enya 60 & EK Radio. Unfortunately placed last (60th)
