Hiya guys..I was wondering if any of you use an enclosed cargo trailer to carry your airplanes?? If so could you pass along what size trailer and if you happen to have any photos of the inside or how you sling/secure you airplanes that would be most excellent!! I'm at a little cross road in that I'm able to carry most of my 60 size classic pattern stuff in the back of a mid sized SUV (Chevy Trailblazer) but I'm a fixin' to need somethin' bigger...I can't afford a different vehicle...
I would be towing it with the Trailblazer so it can't be humongous...I was sorta thinking along the lines of a 5x8 or 5x10 single axle which would also handle my future 50cc Extreme Flight Yak that I'm currently dreaming of...
I'm needing to carry a 80" airplane at the present time and kinda doubt I'll ever go larger than a 100"...
I'm going to put together a PVC rack for the back of the Trailblazer for the time being...Right now I'm just laying the stuff flat and can only really carry one .60 size plane and wing at a time...If I'm careful I can get two in there with blankets and stuff to go in between but that's pretty much the max with the field box sitting in there too...
Any experience you could pass along would be greatly appreciated...Photo's especially!!
Thanks..
Chuck

Chuck,
Most of the trailers people have at the field where I fly are in the 6x12 range. They are signle axle trailers that can easily be pulled around by your Trailblazer. One advantage to with the extra length is that it gives you a place to carry all of the miscelaneous stuff we tend to carry to the field like flight boxes, fuel cans, tool boxes etc in the front and not mixed up with your planes. My friend has a 6x12 with a door on the side which we set up pretty nice. We built an intermediate platform inside the trailer at 1/2 the rear door height from the back door up to the side door and he can carry at least 4 50cc size planes. We hung the platform from 2x4 joist hangars screwed to the sides of the trailer so it can be easily removed so you can use the trailer for other purposes.
I would suggest you buy a trailer that you can stand up straight in. Since I don't know if you are vertically challanged, I'm not sure how tall to suggest...
If I see my friend this weekend, I'll try to get a few pics of the inside of his trailer for you.

Thanks David!! I seem to remember seeing photos of your truck which has a super cool sliding platform that is really slick!! I wish I still had a truck and it would solve allot of problems...Once you've had a truck you never really wanna be without...he he
I just got a 2m airplane which is my big problem...I can do a PVC holder or something but will defiantly have to remove the horizontal stab...That plane plus the flight box will be all that I can carry (comfortably)...It's a Black Magic V-2 and it makes anything else I have look like a Tonka Toy...Heck I may need a bigger house too!! I never realized how big those things really are...
Thanks allot for the info and I think I'm going to look at some tomorrow...I just wasn't sure what size to look for or what everyone else was using...I thought about carrying the Black Magic with me and actually setting it in some trailers to get the feel of how it would work...I know my perception of size is apparently wayyyy off so I need the visual aid along with me...
Not that I wanna carry a whole fleet of planes with me but I would like to be able to carry more than one...
Thanks Allot and hope all is well with you!!

I bought a 5' X 8' enclosed trailer with a single barn door in back for about $500. I made the side door and built a platform to carry two 2M planes. Storage underneath for wings, chairs, tents, and storage up front for generator, tool boxes, fuel, etc. I pull it with my old diesel Suburban locally and on trips with a Volvo V70 wagon.

Yeah that's Awesome!! So the 5x8 trailer will hold a 2m plane that's good to know and I wasn't sure how it would do...That's really all I need because I know I won't ever get into those big 40% aircraft or anything like that...I pretty much have all the airplanes I want except a 50cc Yak and a big F-4U Corsair someday...Other than that I'm pretty well set...
I found a trailer oriented thread which is pretty good...Some people really get into with full on workbenches ect..!! I probably won't wanna go to that extreme but it is pretty neat..
Thanks for the photos of your trailer..That's Excellent..

I picked up this trailer for $14, 900. I traded my F-150(17mpg) and am now getting 25mpg. It has two side doors, a rear door and 12V electrical outlets in the back. The suspension is better than most trailers so the contents don't get beat to death if the road is a little rough. Plus it came with pre-installed lighting and airconditioning and the neighbors don't get upset when it is parked in my driveway

Cheap tile (I wouldn't put the good stuff in my trailer) is about $1.75 a square foot at Home Depot. That would put 60 sq ft in your trailer around $100. If you know a flooring guy and aren't too picky, you can probably pick it up a lot less from his leftovers.
I found out the hard way that the floor tile I used in my old kitchen is NOT fuel resistant. You might want to check first.
Either that, or Fly Electric!

Chuck, my Classic Pattern Transportation Trailer. (Prepared for Electrical Flying)
With:
“In room†repair facility, with air conditioning and central heating.
Generator set for electrical power system and load equipment.
Four cell, ATEX Approved, electrical propulsed, Taurus dosing system with flame retarding soft foam adaptors.
Work bench, tools etc.
BTW, Soon it will be too small for me, need five positions in the drum just as the M39A3.

I spied this sweet machine up at Toledo last weekend. . . . I didn't catch the owner but I would have offered 2 or 3 large on the spot to take it off his hands . .
