It's not the chrome you put on an old car bumper.
Any rate, it's discontinued, can't get parts, you'd be better off with a ringed engine, or better yet, a new engine.
Lots of performance engines available for similar money than buying vintage OS.

I ran two .40 FSR engines and saw absolutely nothing out of the ordinary with either of them and neither would tach higher than my AX. Please elaborate more on your comment, I'd really like to know the mystery here in that statement.
What was so special about an FSR besides in 1974-77 it ran strong in it's heyday? The SF .46 doesn't perform better than my AX either, and I favor the SF's over FSR.

For me, it's purely personal. I LOVE the fsr's, and sf's, and RF's and VF's. I have fx's and don't get me wrong, they're good motors (even the much maligned 90 fx was good once I sorted it out), but to me they somehow lack character. More to the point I like seeing period engines in period aircraft. To me a curare should have a webra 61, or a 61vf, and a summit, or desire should have hanno, and a typhoon should have a 140rx

Ah, I can relate. I like the old round and blue head Super Tigre's I grew up with. These and the X series hold a high price too if you can find one NIB.
There are engines today that look worse than the AX engines. Today's Super Tigre looks like a rough cast that needs to be trimmed down on a bench grinder, the head fins look 1" tall, and boxy. I think they took a muffler off a Kawasaki race bike and said "This will work. Let's call it the Silent Muffler." I liked the one piece old cigar and tear drop styles from the 70s. In spite of the bulk, the cast makes it as light as the FX 61, go figure.

Did you see it? 202 bucks, oh my, oh my!
I like them 61 SF's in my EZ Dago Red and Dallas Doll because they are easy to run and haul those 40 sized model really well.
My new OS 46 AX and OS 55 AX are really nice too. Super easy to run in and they are so easy to start. I just bump them back against compression and they light off.

You ought to compare a NovaRossi. It's cheaper, they turn 18,000rpm (8 ports), and put out more HP.
I don't think you can even hurt their ABC liner if you tried! I'm throwing one on a Cosmic Wind Minnow to see if the plane can take the brute power.

Hehe, yeah I acutally was blown away last weekend, one of my students came down with a super sportster ARF and 55AX. Wow! what a hoot!.
I know I'm a weirdo, but I like old cool things. My two favourite sailplanes are my cirrus and sagitta, My favourite engine is a 61VF, I drive a Classic Mini and listen to my quadraphonic vinyl version of Dark Side of the Moon, while talking to you guys on my 1.5Tb quad core machine

For me it's an affinity for the old school engines (maybe mid-school)...I love my YS's, Hanno's and RF-P's...I spent way too much money "restoring " them but it's worth every penny to me...I could have bought current technology engines much cheeper than fixin' these old ones there is no doubt about it...But a Summitt with an AX on it just doesen't look right...Nothing against the guy who puts a modern engine on his old school plane because it's really the smart thing to do...I just prefer to try and milk these old suckers a little more...

Hey Guys, I have an OS 60 FSR with a Perry pump and carb from 1975 with about 10 flights on it. The pump isn't working but the engine works fine. I have been out of the hobby for 35 years and have just recently jumped back in, and I would either like to find a Perry pump for this engine or sell it to someone who is looking for a somewhat classic engine for a classic pattern aircraft. PM me with info please!!!!!

Maybe you can find a local plating shop that would strip the line and re-chrome. But you would need to give them dimensions.
My $.02 worth.
My Os's are still in good condition, but then I don't use them much either.

I love the old engines too, but I don't have one NIB version of them, IIRC.
I fell in love with the .61 SF after coming back into the hobby in 1990 after a five year layoff. I remembered the SF engines coming out just before I dropped out of the hobby around 1985. Their prices were astronomical back then at just under $300 for a non pumped sample.
Anyway, fast forward to 1990 and a new friend showed up at the field with a painted Super Kaos that was powered by a new .61 SF. I remember him trying to hide a smile on his face when I commented that something must be wrong with his engine because it wasn't turning up like the old .61 FSR's did. After he got it flying around okay and trimmed out, he handed this returning old timer the transmitter and I began flying an old friend (Kaos - any kind) and smiling. Then I pulled the nose until the model was vertical and nearly forgot that I was flying the model as I stared in astonishment at the plane going skyward without hardly slowing down at all. It kept going up and up and up. I finally got control of myself and leveled it out while exclaiming, "Holy plant fertilizer!". Well, it was a little different than that. (smile)
I immediately fell in love with the OS .61SF engine, but didn't obtain one for another ten years or so. Today I have over a half a dozen used samples. One or two are like new. I fly mostly four-strokes these days, but I try to always keep something ready to fly with an OS .61SF mounted on the nose. They are my favorite two-strokes these days. They are brutishly powerful, quiet, smooth and they throttle marvelously.

Hard to beat these SF's. I had two OS55AX's in these Intruder's, a friend of mine sent me a NIB 61SF, said to get rid of the AX's. I gave them away, bolted one of these in, stump puller's. I need a WM Intruder wing, if anyone has one. I was supposed to get a couple of WM Intruder's some time ago from some guy, great price, the deal went south.

Well, you know how old guys are, sometimes they forget things. Especially things that happened very recently. He might have a broken one that he'll give you, but he'll probably want to keep the newer one. Gotta put that .61SF some place.

If anyone is interested I just listed an OS 61SF pumper (ringed version) in the ads section. It's a very nice engine but I just don't have anything to put it in. I'm trying to thin out my rc stuff a little.
I have a a 61SF ABC pumper on my Midwest Super Hots and it's awesome. It has been very reliable, has great response and can hold the airplane on its prop.
If I only had enough rudder/elevator authority to keep it there.
