Default YS 61 Longstroke/ pipe lengths

I've started to operate my YS 61 Longstroke (non-AR) with my Hatori 650 pipe/mac header after many years off. This is in a T2A-MKIV. This is the set up which works well... YS 61, OS #8 plug, APC 13 x10 prop, the measurement from the glow plug to the first weld is 20.3-4". (temp 77/ 57% hum.) On Powermaster 15% ( 2/3 syn. /1/3 castor)...9,700-9,800 rpm, slightly rich. On YS 20/20 ( all syn.)... 10,000 rpm, slightly rich. I like a little castor for better bearing life..... This combo produces outstanding vertical performance..

Hope this helps those operating this engine.

Yeeeessss!!! Pictures of your plane please!!!! That is one plane that's on my "list" and I would love to see some decent photos... [8D]

I'm glad to see your numbers on the pipe length. I have noticed some other suggested lengths which seem way too short to me but that's based on my limited experience. My numbers are right there with you or maybe just a tad shorter.

Have fun with your new plane!!

I intend to run my blackhead YS 61 R LS (I don't know what an AR is and so I am limited in knowledge), a long chamber Bolly c/f pipe and will fit it to my T2A MkII.
I guess I'll need long gear legs and big wheels.
Thanks for the info and I too want pictures!!!

Hi guys,
Here's some photos of my unfinished T2A-MKIV fuselage. I got my kit a couple of years ago from Dan Hines. The fuselage is gel-coated and will not need a lot of painting preparation work. Bill Rutledge flew a T2A-MKIV at the first (and only) N-Pac contest in 1993. I believe he finished 4th in FAI against a field of larger 4-stroke airplanes. He had not competed much and really messed up the 'seeding' of the flight lines at N-Pac (in a good, unexpected, way).
The YS longstroke caused quite a bit of consternation amongst pattern fliers when it came to determining the ideal pipe setting. It didn't seem to like moderate length, but responded well (15.5" plug to 'high' point) for 12x11 props and liked the pipe 2" (or more) longer for the larger (eg 13"x10") props. Excellent power - much more than the stock OS 61RF-ABC-P (prior to the Hanno).

Chris...
I also have some Bolly pipes. I'm sure you will like it and they really sound cool...I absolutely love my Bolly Pipes!!! [8D]

Do you know if you have the EQ-62 or the EQ 63 Bolly pipe?? I only have some limited test stand experience with that set-up but I believe the Bolly pipe actually gains you a couple of hundred RPM's over the Hatori 650. Not that I'm tuning for the razors edge/max performance or anything but every little bit helps. I was using the EQ-62 pipe on those test runs but the EQ-63 is suppose too offer even a tad more than the 62....

The YS 61 "AR" version is a little different than the YS 61R LS. It's designed to perform at lower RPM's and swing a bigger prop than the standard YS LS. The AR is pretty much a head to head competitor for the OS Hanno Special. Both of those engines are designed to make their power @ 9500 rpm's and will easily swing an APC 12x12 9500-10k all day long without breaking a sweat....

Your YS 61R LS is a super engine!! You should typically find the LS is happy with a APC 12x8 to 12x10. The LS will apparently make it's best power in the 11k rpm range. On my test stand I was getting about 10.8k running the YS 61R LS, Powermaster 20/20, APC 12x10 and a Hatori 650 pipe. I don't remember the exact numbers but the Bolly pipe will probably gain you a tad bit over the Hatori. I was sorta figuring the 12x10 was about the max prop I planned to use on the LS but it appears thy may be capable of more... [8D]

Keep in mind that my experience is mostly on the test stand or from reading older forum posts on these engines...I'm sure everyone's set-up will vary a little bit depending on the fuel, prop, atmospheric conditions and airframe but I'd imagine they will be "close"...I was using a length of 19.7" from the glo plug to the first baffle on my YS LS. I could have tuned it a little less conservative and possibly gained a few hundred RPM's but I choose to sacrifice a little performance hopefully for longevity of the engines.

If your interested I wrote a little diddy on some of the differences between the engines in this post:

Hello Chuck

Glad to see your numbers are close to mine. I finished my T2A-MKIV in 1992-93. It is far from new...It was framed up by an excellent builder, Brian Ozment, out of GA. Another outstanding Tom Atkins evolution from the original. I was flying Advanced at the time in TX. Never got a chance to fly it at the NATS like I did with the Patricia or T2A-MKII a few years earlier. I built it to combat Al Glenn and the "Memphis Posse"...

The 4 pt X-Section on the fuse after the belly pan allows for the pipe air to escape.. Great lines.. Great flying machine. I will post pics ASAP..

Chris, the MK II was a faster BPA type design.. I ran a Webra Speed/Dynamix carb with an APC 11 x 9 prop on 10-15% fuel..

Cheers,
BL

Very interesting!! Look forward to the photos whenever you can!!

I haven't seen many really good pictures of the MK IV. When I first saw the tiny photo in one of Dan's brochures it defiantly caught my eye. I'll have to get my name on the list with Dan when I get back home.

It seems to be a little "ahead of it's time from a design standpoint. I've read that it's an excellent flying airplane.

Thanks...

Chuck

Here are some shots of my T2A MKIV that I've had since 1992-1993. The YS 61./Hatori 650 set up is relatively quiet..Great flying machine...Excellent rolling machine...very nice lines for presentation.

Cheers,
