Hippo Tipo help!

Hello All, I came in possession of a Hippo Tipo today at a garage sale - I couldn't believe my eyes. Now for the request for help. I'm needing some information and drawings to help me get this bird in the air, specifically.

1. Firewall template
2. CG
3. Target flying weight
4. Any templates for the elevator and rudder - it was missing these. Probably not critical.

Thanks all!
..AJ

Hello Pitstop - Thanks, I'll post some pics - not much to see there, but an ugly half baked job on the Hippo - The wing and stab are sheeted and glassed (the paint job stinks - but I can fix that). The info that I'm needing would come from the documentation for the plane. To add to the list, I'm also needing mounting technique, dimensions, and positions for the wing mounts.

Thanks again for your help

<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt">Yes, it definitely is a Hippo Tipo, these are some of the pages that have been put into PDF so far, to get you going.
I have the rest of the paperwork and templates for the wings stabs and rudder, originally the wing and stabs were full and you would cut out the elevators and ailerons out.
Hope this helps you out.</div>

Thanks for the info Paul - That stuff is useful! Any luck getting the templates too? On the ailerons/rudder and elevator - I only have the ailerons installed - the rest is missing. Also, it looks like the rudder had a fairing - so I'll have to fabricate that (or leave it out and go with a full rudder all the way to the top.

Thanks again.

Paul, these are perfect for me! Many-many thanks - this is plenty fine to get me going on the tail feathers for sure! On your pics of the firewall - are they 2-piece or is that an optical illusion?

thanks again!

<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt">AJ, what are you planning for a power plant? Retracts and Pipe, Right?</div>

coloradoz 09-29-2010 07:03 PM

RE: Hippo Tipo help!

Well, of course, planning on a complete outfitting. I was thinking of a YS91 for the power w/pipe + spring air on the retracts. I'll mount sideways with the pipe running the the pipe tunnel (like (I've done my my other Tipo - see my pics in my gallery). I've had the 91 sitting around for a while without a good home - this seems like a good home to me. Right now the airframe weighs all of around 3 pounds. So, I think the the 91 and all up it should come in at around 8 pounds or so. My 61 powered Tipo w/pipe - tips the scale at 8 lb/14 oz.

I truly appreciate your help Paul! Believe it or not - this plane will complete my Tipo collection (MK and Great planes versions flying). I have the WK Hobbies, MK, Great Planes and now the Hippo Tipo versions.

Hello Paul - how are you coming on the firewall template?

AJ

I was just waiting on you.
I figured you were just going to use a contour gauge on the fuse to get the bulkhead, since the location might be in a different position for your intended motor.
I can definitely see that you’re a true builder. I'll send you the last template that I have, but not proofed.

That works, nice collection, they’re all nice but that LA-1, WOW!
If I can help with anything else PM me and I’ll send you what I have on the plane.

RE: Hippo Tipo help!

Thanks Paul, I"d appreciate that - I can probably deal with proofing issues - I suppose the other key thing would be the location of the firewall from the nose ring. Do you have any docs on that?

..AJ

pitstop000 10-03-2010 05:16 PM

RE: Hippo Tipo help!

AJ, check that PDF again, just about everything is there that you’ll need.

Very first page, firewall is 4 ¼ from nose.
Actual motor cutout is also there.

Your making me work here now.
I actually have this plane.

Hi Guys,

I acquired a pristine Hanson Tipo 825 kit some time ago. It's missing the build instructions (other than 2 hand written sheets). Any idea where I can find some? Also, what's a good engine for this bird? I have a Hanno Special which is a monster but I was thinking it might be a little small for this - any thoughts?

Thanks,

Jeff

RE: Hippo Tipo help!

Believe it or not, that plane will come out weighing less than the 60 size Tipo (at least in my case) - Depending on where you live, the Hanno should handle it. You can always put a BX 1.08 in it with a johnson side to rear adapter - that's what the throttle is for. I'm putting a YS91 in mine.

Look at the top of this post, Paul was kind enough to post some build instructions there. The only real critical thing that you'll need is the firewall template - I'm still working on mine, I've got a cardboard template now - and hopefully will get one that I can install soon.

Hello Again,

Here is what I have for build info.

Jeff

Well, that is basically the same info that I've got. The only thing missing are the templates. Pretty easy to make up though.
