retracts for atlanta???

Hi all,

I've bought a NIB zigsaw atlanta and since i think it's like cursing in church not to put retracts in it but also since i never installed/used any retracts i was wondering if you (as retract experts ) could tell me wich ones are the best ?
The electric retracts appeal to me because of the simplicity of installing but if there aren't any decent ones also the air/spring ones are ok.

Greetings
Erik (the netherlands)

RE: retracts for atlanta???

go with the electric eflight has a trigear set, next would be air systems spring air has good ones, mechanicals are ok but lots harder to set up, I would go with the electrics if I were you, and yes it would be a crime not to put retracts in that plane

You can use 202 http://www.retracts.com/Retrax_200.htm or 520w1 http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXJZE2&P=0 or mechanical I've used all of them with good results.

RE: retracts for atlanta???

Thank you both for your replies after looking at the options i think i'll go with the e-flite electrical ones mostly because it's the easiest to install i think and doesn't take up much space. And they look very solid and as far as i could find people had good experience with them apart from wires vibrating loose planning on having a good look at that before installing them .

Thanks
Erik

The Atlanta was designesd to use MK mechanical retracts. I found the MK gear was excellent when rigged properlly. I had three Atlantas and really loved the way it would fly.

Completely agree with using MK Retracts. They will drop right into your sheeted wings and they are solid proformers.

Iwould caution against e-flght electrics for the following reasons:

1.) it is a very tight fit for the header to get past the nose retract on an Atlanta. (See pcitures) not sure the E-Flight will work
2.) Tony F has them in his P7 and commented that he is not sure they were designed for nitro planes. He has had problems that he attributes to vibration from his engine.

I set mine up to work on one servo and they have been fine. Resently had a problem with my nose gear but the problem was not related to the retracts but to the steering that had set up. By the way, use a separate servo in for nose steering on channel 7 and slave it to channel 4. Works great and give you an easy way to separate the nose gear and rudder steering. (Kevin's idea)

Good Luck and congrats on getting an Atlanta.

Doug

RE: retracts for atlanta???

I am not sure. Ibelieve that mine are the MK 0742 which do not seem to be made anymore.

Follow this link to see pictures of my mains. Do not be concerned about the color, Ithink mine were anodized red but they typically were green.

www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php

Ihave another set of MK's that "push" to retract the strut versus the ones in my Atlanta that "pull" to retract. Ido not know if that matters or not.

Iwould send Singapore an email and ask them for help in matching the size of the 0742's. They have been helpful to me. Try them at <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA">[email protected].

Good luck!!

Doug

RE: retracts for atlanta???

boomerik,

The MK gear you show in the links look too small to me. After seeing the links I went digging in my old pattern support parts supply and found some well used MK retracts. The MKs I used were black not red. really hard to tell the scale of the red ones but the strut and frames just look small.

Erik here’s an MK retract chart, SS is 20 size.

Atlanta PDF’s version 1 and 2

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showp...02&postcount=9

call for
MK S or MK SP retracts; the MK S’s are Lightweight

One other thing, well really 2 more things that you should start thinking about if using mechanicals is linkage.

This little assembly that MK made, easy to duplicate will get you from the retract servo in the wing to the belly mount going thru the wing for a single servo setup. This setup works for other planes (Aurora/Beetle etc) that are configured like the Atlanta.

Another assembly that MK makes that simplifies installation connections between the retract servo and the retract’s is their “Linkage for Gear” also something that could be fabricated.

You’re going to like the Atlanta! ;)

RE: retracts for atlanta???

pitstop000,

Thats good info. I used the green ones and black ones. Weak link was the centering spring on the nose gear but used to make replacments out of small music wire.

I loved the Atlantas I had, was running an early YS .61 on 30%. After take off, gear up and on the step it was a pleasure to fly.

Hey Frank, My first 2 Atlanta’s in 83 were both powered with Rossi’s, I primarily ran Rossi’s and OPS during that time even though the YS 60 was the Hot setup not because of the power though.

I know what you mean about centering spring, very weak for sure. The spring from the Southern Pro/Dave Brown’s is what I replaced them with.

I used the Green MK SP for nose gear and the Black MK S lightweights in the wing, recommended at the time by Golden Gate, but the next 2 Atlanta’s were setup with Spring Air and YS 60 for power, yup 30% + Special Brew Ha ha Lol. :D

RE: retracts for atlanta???

Got an email back from Singapore hobbies and they only have the MK Sp mains no nose gear anymore .
So i'll have to think about maybe the spring air ones or maybe the e-flite electrical ones with some upfront modifications maybe to help them from breaking because of vibrations .

We will be stocking the MK SP gear (mains and nose part #0703S and 0704S)) with the first shipment due next week. They are not posted on our web site yet but should be in the next day or two. The "One servo Retract Part" #0670 will be here next week also and we have the "Linkage for Gear" part # 0814 in stock now.

Could you PM me what a complete set would cost me including shipping to the Netherlands.

Thank you

RE: retracts for atlanta???

One more thing do not use the E-flite retracts in the Atlanta, the header and pipe are to close to the nose gear and you will damage the wiring from the heat!!!!! Pete
