Anybody interested in a NEW YS shortstroke? New, as in produced this year...

Hi Guys,
I have some potentially very exciting news: YS is considering manufacturing a new 10cc (.61) rear exhaust short-stroke engine.
This really got started by Chip Hyde when he opened the post regarding which 3 classic pattern kits would you be interested in. Of course, the concern was raised regarding availability of rear exhaust engines. I knew Paul Pappas had called Rich Verano about a year ago to inquire about YS making more 60s and there didn't seem to be much interest by YS at the time. I decided to give it another try and spoke to Rich about the possibility of YS producing some more 60s about a month ago. Long story made short(er): we chatted, he chatted with YS and they are interested in the project!
I don't have much information, yet, but I do know the following:
This will be a new version of the short stroke; YS wants to use the long stroke case (apparently they can't make the 'FR' case anymore) and update the design to make it a short stroke engine. I don't have specifics, but essentially this would entail boring out the case; new, larger diameter piston, shorter connecting rod, different crankshaft or just different placement of the crankpin and some porting and timing changes. Knowing YS it will undoubtedly have more power than the original 'FR' and the design philosophy seems to be addressing the needs of the CPA pilots looking for peak power at higher rpm. If the torque curve of this new engine approximates that of the old 'FR' it will be quite flat, producing excellent power at a surprisingly wide rpm range.
I have included some photos of an original .60FR (on the left) and a newer .61LS to whet your appetite.
The only other information I have is that YS is hoping for a mid to late summer 2012 delivery date.
Currently, they are considering making 100 of these new engines.
Is there enough interest to purchase 100 (or more) of these engines? I know I'll be good for a couple - at least!:D
Regards,
Will Bartlett
PS - I have no 'personal' interest or stake in this venture (unlike the Hanno sleeves) - just a very excited spectator!

This is cool! I think 100 engines would last about 5 minutes! :D

Interested?? Yes, but it sure would be great if YS made something that used parts compatible with the old 60 FR. I bet there are hundreds of the FRs around that need piston/liner sets or rods, wristpins or some small parts..........

Is there any indication as to approximately what the price would be for this run of 100 engines?

Best regards,

George

Yes, I am interested but agree with George. Probably would buy 2 of them though if the price was right.

if they use the long stroke modern case it may make for a better engine anyway, having a longer rod with the short stroke makes for better torque and less side loading on the piston as well, which in turn means less wear on sleeve and piston

i will take two of them plus spares

So Will, are you trully saying that YS will only sell the new motors in a lot of 100, not individually? - Steve</p>

I doubt that. I think what Will is saying is that they are doing an initial run of 100 units to be distributed by YS USA and possibly others.

Why not keep it long stroke and get that prop flexibility and torque?

RE: Anybody interested in a NEW YS shortstroke? New, as in produced this year...

Hi guys,
Great response! I will answer questions as best I can. YS wants to make a run of 100 engines which the US importer (Rich Verano) will purchase. The engines will then be made available to the public (I do not know the specifics) for sale. You (the modeling public) can buy 1 or more engines at a time until they are gone. If this is successful (I don't know how that will be determined, but for the sake of argument let's say all the engines are sold within 6 months of release) then YS may consider making more.
Price...? I can't provide any hard numbers, but I can say that the price will not be near $500 and hopefully closer to $300. Remember, this is just at the discussion stage. I threw the $300 figure out when I talked to Rich just as a consideration. My logic is that $300 is probably about what most guys interested in CPA aircraft would be willing to spend, much beyond that and you start approaching the price for a Jett 90 FIRE which are basically custom built. I think the AXE Rossi rear exhaust was about $300 (approximately) when it was available.
One last point, I am doing the 'research' for Rich on the interest level for this engine; so the more honest interest/feedback I get, the better I can assess the market for him.
Thanks,
Will

Will,

With this low of a number being produced...... what would parts availability be then? I understand the drive behind this engine and the reason for it. I would just hate to buy a new engine and 1 year later something happens with very little to no parts support. I understand that we are in this exact predicament with the older engines.... But there were how many hundereds made so parts are still out there. Just thinking outside the box on this.

Food for thought: Now if YS would remake 100 piston/liner sets with a better rod for the old FR I think you would have a 99.9% guarantee that those would sell in a heart beat..... I know... wishful thinking...[&o]

its not a big issue, the castings dies for the the longstroke are current, the only new stuff is the cnc files to cut pistons and new rods, and sleeves, rather simple issues for new parts, a digital file versus dies for castings..... its exciting times that ballistic planes and engines are making a resurgence.. a ballistic renaissance even!

Will,
...and can you also chat with somebody to talk to OS to have some RFs or even Hannos be made...??
There should be some interest in this all around the world i guess.

We've brought that up several times in the past with the folks at Tower/Hobbico, and the answer was always that it wasn't
something OS was interested in...maybe with YS getting involved the answer may change.

Will, I would take one or two of YS short strokes if they are in the $300 ballpark. Now we just need Hatori to make pipes and headers readily available again!

Yes I want one, if you allow purchase for overseas buyer. I live in Bali, Indonesia.
Have almost complete an MK Cosmos 60 and would love to have a YS pulling it.

Why bother with an engine with such a short production run? You don't need them anyway. You can buy all you need from Jett if well healed, and Fox if not.

I think 500 to 1000 flights is required to need bearings. How much for a piston and liner?
I 've flown 20 gallons through an OS 46 AX and see no need to do anything to it, so I wonder if the need for parts is somehow over stated.
Anyone flown their Classic so much lately!? You know, enough to really warrant replacement parts?

I think is true too. One could run it fast or slow with load and pipe setting. Not as true with the long strokes.

Which makes me wonder...If what Will sez is true, YS is gonna mess with a winning recipe yet again and get the adoring public to figure it out as they have done time and again with their 4 cycles.

Gotta admire YS Marketing strategies. Introducing a half baked solution every 6-12 months and having folks figger them out as they go. It should be taught in Business school as Marketing 101

Well, no. If it was, they'd charge $600, it'd barely make more power than an OS .40LA, and would be made out of depleted uranium for no apparent reason.
