I flew my Viscount yesterday for the first time this year. I flew it only a couple times last year because of other stuff getting in the way. I hope the Pattern Master is just as much fun to fly. With the OS 46 and 12-6 prop it is probably overpowered as it has almost unlimited vertical. I believe the plans called for lesser displacement engine. Flying around at half throttle is enough for it to perform well. Touch and go's are a hoot. It sticks to the runway at touchdown and cleanly takes off when the power is applied. Full stop landings on the asphalt runway are fun to watch with the nose gear brake.
deBolt did some fine work when he designed an airplane. My Viscount will be one of the favorites of all airplanes.

Today my rebuilt pattern master plane flew again. Since I haven't flown for over 20 years, an experienced pilot took it up. It was a handful as the ailerons didn't have enough throw and it was a windy day. It was landed safely and a closer look revealed the wing was a little warped. Also the differential throw was too much and the consensus was to make some minor corrections to all. It was great to see her fly again and when the fixes are complete, I hope I get my hands on the radio. The Irvine .40 I have in her is more than ample power and I was pleased with my new Taranis radio as well. Happy flying!

The deBolt Viscount - what a fun airplane to fly! Sadly,I have to report that my Viscount suffered damage the other day.
What a hot rod with the OS 46 and 11-6 prop. It would go straight up forever. I was doing a simple string of three rolls when suddenly, the wings blew off. I thought maybe the rubber bands all broke, but surveying the damage, the wings broke off outside of the dihedral brace. The fuse is repairable with only a firewall broken out and some minor damage elsewhere.
The wing was built according to the plans but obviously not sufficiently strong for the high powered engines of today. A new wing is under way with far stronger spars. It will fly again. A great airplane like that can't be allowed to see the garbage can.
I am relating this incident to urge builders to consider that sometimes the structure of 50 year old planes aren't stressed for the modern day engines. Just a heads up.
