This is great! Now we can separate screaming pattern from turn around. Alot of us have been around for a while. The air hoses in my 1982 Deception with Rhom retracts has the flexibility of dry pasta, that is no flex at all.

What do you think about the Rhom piston seals? If needed can the O- rings be obtained and replaced?

The prop on the ABC Webra was reluctant to turn years ago when I last tried. They told me the castor would gum it up.

It is off to the field now, if the rain holds off the Pursuit will fly!

I haven’t looked at the “O” rings in my Rom-Air retracts, but I would think if you take them apart a good hardware store should have a “O” ring. New air line is available from Spring Air or Tower.

You’ll want to pull the engine out and pull off the back plate. I’ve found that spray can automotive carb cleaner cuts the old gooey oil pretty well (keep it off plastic). Make sure the balls in the ball bearings are moving. Be sure to oil up everything well before reassembly and you should be good to go.

I am glad to see that someone besides me is interested in the old turn around pattern. I don't much care for 3D myself. Big loops with my Curare and Kaos, can't beat them. Have you guys seen the SPA website?

I am in Baltimore, MD. I am 39, got started in 1979 in the hobby. My father initiated it with a close friend of his who was an Air Force B-58 hustler pilot back in the 50's. I learned to fly on his Kaos. My first ship was a Sig Commander with a ST 56. Kraft 4 Gold radio.
The club I belong to is comprised of alot of older guys, who are interested in getting back to early turn around style pattern. I am one of the leaders of this move. The club is hosting a TOC today with all of those big 30% on up ships. None of the pilots entered are from our own club.

I got my start in turn around pattern. It was fun and you did not need a big trailer to bring your plane to the field!!! We are going to do a club fun fly based on SPA rules and patterns.

If anyone sees some classic threads in the regular pattern forum which were created prior to this forum's creation just report the first post to a moderator and request the entire thread be moved here to classic pattern forum.

Good to see this forum. I have a soft spot for the older pattern designs. I also fly IMAC and was at the Baltimore contest on Sunday mentioned above (not flying). I like to relax and practice with an older pattern design when getting out the 50CC or larger planes is too much work. My first pattern plane was a Top Flite Taurus. Crashed into my BIL's company car door when racing. Quick FLI's, Kaos and Daddy Rabbits are among the designs I like. I have a kit for a Daddy Rabbit in the collection. It is still available from Jim Whitley's original design.

Hi Excap232, haven't seen you for a while. You and I talked about this at Doug's a good while back. I am still interested in stirring up a Senior Pattern Association Chapter for Maryland. I also wouldn't have a problem hosting an event at the Charles County R/C club, but I can't justify shutting the field down for just 3 or 4 guys. If we could get 15 to 18 active flyers we could have a great time.
I have tried to stir up interest, but as soon as folks find out they have to fly an approved airplane (99% of which are not ARF's) their interest quickly disappears. Heaven forbid they pick up a sanding block, you know!;)
Jarhead24, If you have some interested flyers up your way let me know. Maybe we can put something together.

In the mid-west they fly SPA events with ANY plane, giving a small bonus to SPA approved planes. This has proved to be a good solution and has sparked a resurgent interest in pattern as a whole. Please see my post on the SPA discussion thread and comment.

Good to hear from you. I heard you have been quite busy recently. I'm going to Doug's on Sat AM if you can make in by.

I'm not sure what members may be interested in flying classic pattern. It may be a good idea to open this to any plane as suggested in the post following yours ( spbyrum ). I'm having trouble just getting a few people out to fly in some orderly fashion. I invited an Unlimited IMAC pilot in for a demo and the membership just didn't get it. Demo was with a self designed Extra 260 40%. Go figure? This pilot won unlimited last weekend at the SWAP IMAC event. In any case we'll keep trying.

Flying and kind of pattern sequence will elevate your piloting skills. There is a small group forming willing to try this. Most will be entering IMAC later this year. Flying classic planes should be much less stressful (at least considering the giant $$ involved) for most.

Just having recently bought an Atlanta 60 which I am refurbishing before my first flight, I have not previously been exposed to Pattern flying. I noticed on the SPA site that retracts are not allowed and only airplanes made prior to a certain date. Where does that place airplanes like the Brushfire and Atlanta 60?

8178, just a hint on O-rings. I had a need for some O-rings to rebuild the brake cylinders on my full sized airplane. Someone suggested a local hydraulic repair shop. In a little half run down building on a side street the man who ran this hydraulic equipment and hose repair shop had huge quantities of every imaginable O-ring. He even gave me a handful at no charge as he said they were only pennies a piece the way he bought them.

SPA is having a "Open Class" (pipes and retracts, for pattern planes like the Alanta ) contest in April 2006. I believe it is the 22 and 23. I can not remember the location..... With any luck, there will be enough open class planes to give the SPA a reason to consider this class as a regular.

However, I believe that one can fly any plane in the novice class. Not 100% sure on that... so do not quote me on that.

You are correct! Any AMA approved aircraft can be flown in the novice class but retract gear must stay extended. SPA flyers can spend big bucks on OS 91 FSs but not on retracts.

Hey guy's sup, i'm new to this stuff, I just started about 8 month's ago and I just got a four star 60, I realy like it , I know it's not what you guy's fly; I think:eek: this is a good starter plane, but my question is, what are the name of the pattern's I should be trying to learn, and wear are some good diagram's of them besides the AMA oficual adobe stuff because that stuff don't have enough diagram's can anyone help??[sm=bananahead.gif][sm=bananahead.gif]

Hi Guys! Anyone familiar with a Sig Kougar MKll? I just received a kit from my Dad for Christmas and understand it was a good pattern plane in it's day. He said it was one he wanted to build but never got around to it. He's now retired from flying. He also sent me a new OS Max .46 LA and a Futaba 6 channel radio with it! Talk about knowing what a guy wants! I appreciate any coments you might have. Thanks!

I'm familiar with the Cougar,which is not to be confused with the later 'King Cobra..' I bought a custom built one from an old friend Gary Horn,who bought it from John Connors who evenings off his Government job had a really memorable little shop in the corner of a Drug Store in District Heights Maryland years back. This airplane has EXCELLENT flying manners at all flying speeds it is "groovey"and predictabable as they used to say. With that plastic turtle deck and clear canopy and foam wings you will have it together and looking great in no time I'M sure...and with say the latestest production model of the O.S.46 and the air frame covered with Ultracoat or Monokote( for example,) you will have a cool airplane A keeper-----------[8D]

I just finished my Kougar and maidened it two weeks ago. Great plane. The build is not as easy as all that, with having to cut out the balsa and sand everything, but it is worth it in the end. Watch the landing gear blocks, I reversed mine and had to cut them out and reset them. Enjoy.

Whoops--forgot carving and sanding ,which I love its the "clean up" that I do not like,those balsa shavings and dust build up quick...
