Hallo Dave, I have the original RCM&E magazine April 1982 with the description of the Magic's plans. If you still require the artcle I will scan it for you. How do I get the pdf to you?
I am now busy building the Rogamodell Kit Magic. The model will be powered by a Turnigy 1,5Kw motor, 14x7 APC and 6 cell Lipo battery. I got the kit without any instructions or plans and is building by modelling experience only.

Hendrik du Preez,

Is it a Rögamodell Magic 40 You have? If Yes, then I have building instruction and "plan" if you want a copy of it. All text in German language in building instruction and on the plan.

Good afternoon again

Thanks for the quick reply. I have got the Rögamodell Magic 60. It is the bigger brother.
It has a fiberglass fuselage and sheeted foam wings and tailplane.
The kit contains lots of wooden parts that I don't were to use. There may be similarity between the two kits. Information about the assembly of the Magic 40 may be useful.

Fellas,

glad to see this thread resurrected. The RCM&E article is indeed on the Trenton site but not a full sized plan. The quality of the plan in the article is such that it would be difficult to build or use them for design reference from.

If someone is able to scan or has a PDF/TIF of the accompanying full size plan it would be much appreciated - by me and the Trenton site.

Bo, I'd be interested in a copy of the German M40 glass/foam documentation (construction and plans) if you have them. Translation is not a problem. Given the development of the MK 20 conservation project, any and all information on Hanno's designs is very useful and most welcome. While the project is by en large about the MK 20 kits (hence, Curare and Magic), it is a goal to also reproduce the much simpler OK Model 20 size Prettner designs including the non publicly documented ones (Calypso and Sensation) - in time, hopefully all 8 of them!
[ul][*] Super Sicroly[*] Curare[*] Magic[*] Calypso[*] Supra Fly[*] Supra Star[*] Mystic[*] Sensation
[/ul]
Finally, I am also interested in the original MK 40 and 60 size plans if anyone has a copy.

I look forward to hearing from you when convenient.

David.

RE: MK

Bo,

is the top deck and cowl on the M40 German kit ABS plastic or are they gel coated glass?

Does the plan or instructions discuss power plants for the model? Is an OS 40 VF or YS 45 FR suggested by any chance? What about headers? S-shaped as in the MK designs? I'm trying to envision the engine choices at the time of production for a RE engine design such as that M40.

David.

Hendrik du Preez,

I have now fixed a digital version of the Rögamodell "plan" of Magic 40. It is same plan for Rögamodell 60 version since on my plan there is a sticker placed over the specification, on the sticker (for Magic 40) it is Wingspan (Spw, Spannweite) 1440 mm, Total fuselage length (Rul, Rumpf uber alles längde) 1310 mm, Flying weight (Flgw, Fliegt gewicht) 2900-3400 gram, Wingloading (Flbel, Flächenbelastung) 58-68 gram/dm2 AND under the sticker I can read for Magic 60: Wingspan 1660 mm, Total fuselage length 1450 mm, Flying weight 4100 gram, Wingloading 65-70 gram/dm2. All measurements on the plan is for Magic 40 but can be figured out what they should be for a Magic 60.
I also fixed digital version of the building instruction for Magic 40 (in German language).

RögaModell Magic 40 building instruction (in German) below.

Rögamodell Magic 40 plan (not as detalied asMK or RCM & E plan of Magic 60) below.
Note: The drawing itself is scale 1:1 but the actualmodel drawn on this scale1:1 paper has not any special scale, it has some measurements here and there, it is not meant to scratchbuild from this plan. I think You should use RCM & E or MK Magic plans instead.

David,

Rögamodell Magic 40 (and I'm sure Magic 60 also) has epoxy fuselage and epoxy top deck. The cowl is ABS that is meant to be reinforced with some layer of epoxy+weave inside for extra strength - would be easy to make an allepoxy cowl with the ABS cowl as mould. There is also an ABS part to cover underside wing at fuselage.

It is not mentioned any special make and model of .40 engine (on box it say only "Motor 6,5 ccm"). In the building instruction it is mentioned two part numbers to Rögamodellcatalog for exhaust bend, one for engine with side exhaust (part no 01 4009) and another for rear exhaust (part no 01 4008). Hanno Prettner had in his Magic 60 a Super Tigre X 61 TST RE RC with Super Tigre pipe. Super Tigre had also at this time, 1982, an X 40 RE RC with pipe so I guess that could have been used. But probably Rögamodell had some prefered engine make and model for their Magic 40. But I have not any Rögamodell catalog from that time so I do not know.

Your OS40 VF: Is it not a ducted fan engine? Maybe little to high rpm engine for this pattern plane? (remember Hanno Prettner was using a Kato variable pitch prop on his Magic 60 and wanted low RPM - about 12 000).
YS 45FR: If it is side exhaust that is probably one disadvantage since rear exhaust engine on a Magic (40 or 60) would be better, to geta straight exhaust line and not need to have a sligtly turned clockwise (seen from front)engine. There is a picture in Rögamodell building instruction about side exhaust engine mounting.

I have MK Magic 60 plan also but need to scan it and convert to PDF, then I can post it here (probably next week).

If someone want to have a look at RCM & E Magic 60 plan I have a high resolution scan from RCM & E April 1982 construction article of Magic 60 where drawing is shown. Reasonably good quality that I converted to PDF.

Hi Hendrik

Thanks for the offer but I got the article off a mate a few years back. I scanned it in and sent it to add to the "image database" mentioned earlier.

Hi Bem
Thanks for the pic of Hannos Magic. Its only the second pic ive seen of that colour scheme (didnt like the brown/gold version). I wasnt even sure the pic I had was a proper Hanno colour scheme until now!!!

Hallo Bem,

Thank you for the plans and assembly instruction. It will help a lot in building my Magic 60. The plan you supplied will work perfectly for the Magic 60.

My Magic has a fiberglass engine cowl. The box has the brown and gold colour scheme, I also think the red, white and blue is more attractive.

Hendrik.

dave.windymiller 01-10-2011 12:11 PM

RE: MK

On Hannos model, the red is limited to the "Magic" lettering and the stripes on the fin. The rest is orange!

The MK kits dont have the orange and show it as all red i believe!

Cheers
Dave

Hi,
Here is MK Magic 60 drawing in PDF as promised earlier above:

http://www.algonet.se/~boem/Drawings...0_Scale1-1.pdf

I scanned the orginal MK Magic 60 plan first to TIF (with LZW compression) 400 dpi in greyscale to preserve all detail and the file was as expected huge (about 250 MB) but that is no problem for a computer to handle these days. Then I horizonted the the drawing in a drawing program using the fuselage centerline to get it level and then printed to Adobe PDF (about 23 MB). Result is as above link. Good quality preserved - zoom into the PDF and You will see every thin line, all is there. Hope someone have use of it. I will scan the wing- and stabribs also from the kit balsa sheets, without them it is difficult to build the wing and stab since not much of side view of the ribs are shown on the drawing. It will take some days before that is finished.

Thank you for the Magic 60 plan. I'll look forward to the additional scan that shows the rib detail.

RE: MK

Bo,

Thanks for all these plans and scans. The MK Magic plan will certainly form part of my special collection of plans.

I was actually just taking a look at them and wondering what caused the grey background in the plan. It's possible that the greyscale setting in the scan might have introduced it. I'm not sure if much is lost if one scans as B&W rather than greyscale. Maybe it's possible to turn the grey background into white with some clever photoshop trick. I'm not PSD expert although I do use it regularly. If I can find a way to obtain a black line art drawing on white background, I'll repost the plan.

Thanks again for your time and efforts. Like Greg, I look forward to the missing info on the plan (ribs, etc.)

David.

MAGIC 60____I have just completed the fiberglass version of the magic 60. Have the basic plans...it calls for the CG 4-3/8 to 5 3/8...thats a large swing...was wondering if anyone has a recommended position? Equally important, the plans do not list control throws. I was hoping someone would have a recommended control throws? Any assistance would be appreciated.
thank you
ray

doxilia 08-14-2011 07:22 AM

RE: MK

Ray,

re throws try:

elevator: +- 1/2"
ailerons: +- 3/8"
rudder: +- 2" (or max throw)

then dual rate them down to 60-70% for the maiden.

CG: Start at 4-3/8" and take it from there.

Post some pics!

David.

Very nice to see, cool pics.
Did Hanno leave the Magic in Acapulco after the championships? 30 years gone already....
Looks like the plane was flown later without the variable pitch prop.

Good afternoon fellow Magic lovers
My Magic is complete now. The plans and advice posted on the website made it possible. It has yet to fly. I am working on the courage to take it up. It is not your typical park flyer and quite intimidating.

Hendrick,

Congratulations on the completion of your Majic. It is certainly a beautiful airplane........:D I see you made yours electric. If I may ask, what is your power setup?

Good luck with your upcoming maiden. Don't let your nerves get the best of you. I'm sure you'll do just fine.
