I just scored Big Time!! I got this Awesome Vacuum Pump from a surplus sale at work!! Now I get to retire my old noisy automotive vacuum pump...

Weird what sort of stupid things get a guy all excited..Isn't it... :D

Just a quick update..The Master Model is finally complete with the exception of sanding and buffing...Now it's time to set up and make some Real Tools!!

Thanks Dave..I was going to wipe the dust off in that first photo but the paint is Really Fresh...I just decided to leave it... ;)

I don't know why but doesn't everybody want to touch wet paint?? As long as I've been painting that has been a constant....Weird...

It happens at work all the time - "Is that Wet?? Ooops"... :D

Either way, the original IS ready to be put back together..isn't it. just wanted to load up your list of things to do. :D
Have you ever thought of a clear canopy for an Atlanta? Or do you think that would look too out of place?

Wow! What a craftsman, I have to say that these build posts really inspire me as well. I can't wait to see what the finished tooling molds will look like, let alone the fuse itself.

I could use my transfer to make fuselages...I originally set out to make the transfers as a light and flexible laminate which would help me reduce stress on my Atlanta fuselage...Then I'd just toss them when I was done...As it turned out when I added the back-up structure it really stiffened up so now it's very rigid...It really worked out well and I think most folks would be satisfied using it as their actual mold...In reality it's good enough... (I havn't tossed em' yet)

Since I'm not only making tools for me but an additional set for someone else I wanted them to be extra super nice....I didn't want all the unnecessary mold lines...I also wanted to fix a few minor fit and finish type issues that exist on my original Atlanta...So that is the reason I'm going through the extra work to make another set of molds...

I hope it all works out...We'll see... ;)

That could be done...Not something I personally would be interested in...But if a fellow wanted to alter his fuselage he could easily cut the canopy section and build a cockpit floor out of wood or glass...Then take the section they removed..stiffen it up to make a vacuum form plug and make himself a clear canopy... :D

I would have to modify the molds in order to produce a fuselage that was made for a clear canopy...I havn't considered doing that for the Atlanta...However I have planned to do exactly that on a future project (Aurora)...I was planning to make a canopy plug for the mold so you could have your choice of a fuselage with either a molded canopy or the traditional clear canopy...I've been running through that process in my mind but I'm not 100% sure weather I'll do it or not...

and i was concerned when i purchased an old fiberglass Skymaster 60 that i would have a hard time getting it repaired. turns out a guy (chuck) lives up the road from me about 30-40 miles contacts me and offers to help. i couldn't find a more knowledgeable fiberglass guy in a hundred years. i couldn't believe my luck. i can't wait to see what wizardry he can do on the Skymaster when he gets the time.

no, the skymaster justs needs to be stripped, repaired and repainted. we talked about the splash idea but chuck has other ideas on creating skymaster molds.

I wanna do a foam mock-up uf the SkyMaster just like I plan for the Aurora...That way it won't risk anyones airplane...

I didn't mind using My Own fuselage to make the Atlanta molds...I understood the risks and was willing to sacrifice MY fuse for the cause...I'd hate to risk someone elses fuse to such a risky procedure...I got lucky with the Atlanta and it survived with little to no damage...I really don't want to push my luck with someone elses stuff... ;)

Building a foam mock-up is much safer...Will be allot of work but that is OK... :D

I am looking for a Skymaster 60 Plan, PDF, anybody? Anybody have an orginal kit, I like to make molds off any fiberglass parts in the kit.

So what?? Is there a hidden camera in my basement?? I'm just working on a Skymaster as you posted this...lol...Funny..

There are problems with the Turtledeck...I bought this Skymaster "as is" and the guy did a nice job construction wise but the turtledeck he supplied as well as a different (new) turtledeck do not fit right...I'm gonna strighten it out and I'll make a mold off the re-worked one...The chin cowl is closer but it ain't quite right either...

I gotta get to Kinkos and get the drawing electronisized or whatever...I'll try and do that today or tomorrow and post the PDF...There were a couple of other guys who wanted a copy too (doxilla and jofrooo I think??)

I've been wanting to study that plan in order to make progress on the 20 size version.

the scan will take all of 2 minutes. The wait might be another story but Kinko's is quite efficient as long as you're not at the local university Kinko's.

Make sure you take a USB memory thingy for them to put the plan on. They can save the file as TIF or PDF but I recommend the latter unless they can provide you with both. Producing a raster (TIF) and vector (PDF) file of the scan at source is a good idea as the conversion of one to the other tends to produce larger files (especially TIF -> PDF). Whatever the case may be I can covert the file to produce a PDF if needed (for my purposes if nothing else).

One more comment. Make sure they feed the plan in "square". The local talent is not always up to snuff and if they feed the plan in at 1-2 degrees, it will have to be rotated to aid in the process of an eventual CAD file (or even for a straight print building plan). One looses quality (i.e., definition) when rotated.

Usually the PDF format is a compressed TIFF. It's still a raster internally, unfortunately. At least when they scanned them for me. I usually specified TIFF, UNCOMPRESSED!!! on the order form. I also tell them "the file should be about 12 meg - if it's not, you didn't set the UNcompression correctly." When my daughter worked at Staples she was the only one who could do it right.

In other words, YMMV.
