Very nice Mach 1. Make another, you will be glad you did.

RE: Old enough to remember Pro-Line Radios ?

Working on a Tiporare. Spektrum radio, Webra Speed .61, one of my old vintage Mac's mufflers, Dave Brown retracts. Meanwhile, flying my Sig Somethin' Extra and my Seagull Ultimate Bipe. Actually, the Mach 1 was my least favorite pattern plane from that era. I liked my Troublemaker a lot, my two Dirty Birdi's the best, my Intruder and Phoenix sort of in the middle. I've got my fingers crossed that the Tipo will be great. If I had to pick a SPA legal airplane, I'd probably have to go with the Phoenix (but I hate to think about building a Phoenix with fixed gear), or maybe something totally different.... like a Daddy Rabbit. It looks like an oversize Kaos, so who cares if it has gear hanging down.

I really love the build threads you've published. Lots of work there, but you certainly set an example for exemplary build projects. What do you do with them all? I know you've talked about flying some of them, do you sell any off, or fly them all? Which "classic" pattern plane would you pick as the "best" overall and why?

Cheers,

ChiefK

Thanks for the great pic Chief. One of my next questions you answered, what kind of retracts. Are/were they mechanical? Do you recall what servo you used for them? I hope to use my Kraft SS, updated to M*2K, with original flight pack so the setup will be close to the original for that time. I was surprised the old ST.60 that came with the fuse runs great. Gino

Gino,

Yep... mechanical retracts, then and now. ProLine servos then, HiTec now. Since my previous post, I looked at the Classic Pattern image base and note that the Dirty Birdy is SPA legal. Maybe it's time to think about number 3!

WOW....

Sure have enjoyed reading this thread. Talk of Dave Brown, John Maloney, and Tony Frackowiak has brought back memories.

I learned to fly back in the early eighties at the Loveland Propbusters where Tony flew. He was always there, testing and flying his new creations. He was one of the first that I knew of that could fly a heli inverted. I remember watching in amazement, "How on earth does he do that"....It was a joy to watch him fly.

I'm sure he wouldn't remember me, but it would be interesting to hear where he's at and what he's doing. I often think of when I was learning to fly and how he inspired me....

Tony is in CA, I think rep for one of the radio company's. JR or Futaba. I worked for John Maloney same time Dave Brown was there. I have been to the Loveland field, and that was around 1972 or 73. Lot of green grass when there. I see Dave once in a while, when coming to Ohio to visit.

RE: Old enough to remember Pro-Line Radios ?

I interviewed for a job at World Engines in '81 after I got layed off from Milacron. I didn't get the job but luckily I got called back to the Mill and am still there... I did a search after posting and found tons of threads where Tony had posted. Interesting to read up on him after all these years. Even found a recent video of him flying his Trex 600....The Internet is a wonderful thing!!!!

The Loveland field is no longer there. It moved over around East Fork Lake by the dam. Its been there now for many years....

Thanks for the reply....

Hi guys, If you're still here. Gino here with more Mach 1 questions & info.
Had a set of foam cores made by Flying Foam based on the drawings I had to wait 6 weeks for. As I look at the drawings they don't tell me much and I haven't ever done any sheeting on foam before. Should be able to figure it out, I hope! Someone mentioned Southern retracts, are they, or similar ones still available? Any thoughts on a good retract servo that will fit? Thanks for coming thru for me a few months back! Gino

RE: Old enough to remember Pro-Line Radios ?

I laughed when I read this thread. I never had any malfunctions when using Kraft radios except for a two channel that I bought used and it only malfunctioned when in used in a race boat with a screaming .40. It drove Bill Johnson nuts but he fixed it. However, when I bought a Proline 6 channel SS, I lost two airplanes! The problem, Proline used KPS 15III mechanics from Kraft and the pot molding was a little too deep, causing the wiper to loose contact with the pot element. And only in the air! Those Chidgey designed sticks were the best ever made, in my opinion.

I could not afford a proline then, or a Kraft, had a used world blue max still got box paperwork just like it came off the shelf, gimbals a little stiff! I still have 2 sets of the sonic system, used them on glodberg retracts. I was in to scale back then..... you guys had me by a few years LOL Pete

I sure remember Proline. I was fortunate enough to live in Huntsville AL at the time Jim Fosgate was making his radios in the neighboring city of Decatur AL. I well remember Jim Whitley flying demos with the antenna off. A number of us in the Rocket City RC Club had Prolines - they were the Cadillac of radios in their day.

My first radio was an MRC three chanel (Futaba's entry into the U.S. Market), as that was all my summer job could afford me. I used to droul over those Pro-line sticks. I stepped up to Kraft Radios when I could afford them since the plant was practacly in my back yard. (it's a machine job-shop now)

My first radio (digital proportional) was also an MRC. It was a 5 channel IIRC. I chose MRC because they made some of the best slot car hand controllers that I had used in the Mid/late '60s. The radio did not disappoint me.
