I recently purchased a NIB HB 61. I normally build and fly 1/2 to .15 size planes, but I love the look of the older pattern planes. I like to build from plans and would love to put the HB in a pattern ship. I want it to be all wood, fixed gear, and not require a tuned pipe.

What are you's all (southern) suggestions?

Are any of the online plans any good? I did find a couple of Koas plans online that look pretty good, but I had in mind more of a mid wing design. That is not set in stone however.

Thanks

The Peppermint Pattie II looks like a winner! Can anyone tell me if this short kit includes the formers?

Thanks for the suggestions!

fp, I know of four HB .61's (there may be more). Can you tell us which one you have from this list?

Early version with red head
Standard non-PDP version
PDP with red letters on mounting lug
Blitz PDP version with black letters on lug and black head

Better yet, post a photo.

The Blitz is timed for a tuned pipe, the others for a standard muffler.

It has black letters and a black head, but has a flow-through muffler.

Thanks fp. That's a fifth version I hadn't seen. Yours also has the HB carb. The PDP versions shipped with Perry's. No problem finding a quieter muffler as the K&B .61 and Webra 10ccm mufflers fit.

I have a HB PDP with a HB carb!!
I know it isn't a hybrid because my Dad bought it brandnew back in the day.
I had it on my Phoenix 5, RIP. It is going into my Mach 1 next.

I'm no expert.:D:D I know the .50 and the smaller ones, like .12, .15., .20, etc., came with Perry's, too. Maybe there was no hard and fast rule at the HB factory. In fact, all of my HB's have Perry carbs (I don't have one with the HB carb). Does anyone know how many different .61's HB made? As of fp's photos, I now know of five.

I got this engine as one of three from the auction site. The other 2 are k&b 65's, one for use in my sons kadet, and the other to sell. The purchase also included 10 12oz tanks and 97!!! 12x5 props. I have not flown plane larger than a .15 in about 4 years, so it is a real change to be holding an engine that weighs more than the last two airplanes I built combined (a .02 lightest stick and a .049 blink). If anyone would like some props or a tank or two, just let me know!

BTW: Is this a good prop for pattern? I am out of my element when prop selection goes above 11".

Thanks for all the replies!

That's probably not enough prop for a piped .61. You would probably do better with something like an 11~8 or 12~6, 8 depending on how fast you want your plane to fly.

Cees, that one has the older style case with the cross-flow bulge more apparent. It looks closer in date to the red head versions I've seen.

My .61 PDP has fins on either side of the bulge.

Is there a seventh version?:D
