JETT
BSE FIRE 1.00LX R/C this looks Very cool
Rear exhaust, turns 14,550 RPM, reasonable weight.....
A little pricey for NZ Dollars.... but ...... a great thought.

Jett engines!! I wonder if there is a finer engine out there?? Although I have no personal experience with them I use to hang with a few Q-500 types who swore by Jett engines...They are impressive...I hope to own one myself someday... ;)

Pricey..Yes...But in this case I think you are getting what you pay for IMHO...

Keith is putting a BSE 90 on a Bridi XLT in this thread and I thought you might wanna take a look:

My uncle owns a Jett .90 rear exhaust, header and pipe. what a work of art is.

RE: MK Silent build

It looks like the Jett may well be the motor of Choice.
2 Stroke, 14 to 16000 RPM rear exhaust.
Apart from the size (Cubic capacity) what is the real difference between the 90LX and the 1.00 LX motors?

RE: MK Silent build

Just a bit more perspective on the Jett. First there aren't a whole lot of choices for rear exhaust 2-stroke engines (any size) anymore. Webra makes an 80 (as well as the 145 and 160), but the price here is a bit over $400US. The AXE Rossi 61 5 port is $325. Both are very well made engines. You can wait for a Hanno Special or YS AR to appear on eBay, but used ones are always a bit 'iffy' and new ones - especially Hannos, can easily get bid up to the $400 range. The Jet is basically a hand made engine custom made for you once you order/pay for the engine. It is test run at the factory and the engines are extremely well made! I have one and they are a beautiful piece of machinery. I have not flown mine yet, but will eventually. There was a very nice Curare which appeared here, powered with a Jett engine (I can't remember which one, but I think it was a 90 side exhaust). The owner loved it. Sadly it had a very short life span. I believe Dubb Jett will work pretty hard to repair an engine as well; unless it is truly destroyed.
Just my 2 cents...

RE: MK Silent build

flywilly,

That was my reasoning as well for choosing a Jett engine.  Why pay $450 for a used Hanno when I can get a brand new Jett for the same price.  Dub matched the pipe and test ran it before shipping.  He even made me a 2 degree shim for the header so I can get the pipe to go straight down the airplane.  Now THAT's service. . He also personally answered about 10 e-mail questions I had after I got the engine.
.
.
I sent a PM to Bob Brassell asking him to drop into this forum once in a while since it appears a few guys are looking to Jett for their CPA / BPA engines. . .

Greg,

Are you not familiar with MVVS engines in New Zealand?
Take a look, their website:

http://www.mvvs.cz/glow%20engines.html

Power range:
10 / 12,7 / 15 CC = 0.60 0.75 0.90 cu in

You can change the exhaust position of any NEW engine, before first start.
I do use 7,5 cc and 10 cc and I am very content with the performance, quality and service.

Hi David, The Silent Kit turned up and I cannot see the 'Cheeks" in the kit? ( sorry about that) They did not show on the picture or the Plan.
It is a 1.20 kit and is 69 inches same as yours.
I am going to go with Spring Airs and build it as a trike. Plans show option for taildragger also.
I am heading to the "FABULOUS" model shop in Palmerston North tomorrow, and will suss out with the "GURUS" what type of Spring air retracts I need.
I reckon that I will probably go with the JETT motor, it looks so tasty......!! I looked at the MVVS motors and they are an option, however I like the handcrafted and factory tuned JETTS.
Cheers Greg:D

Do most people go with original colour scheme , or change it up a bit.
The Silent was not overly inspiring in its colour .

i would think any of the multi color japanese paint schemes would work well. the Addiction build paint scheme comes to mind.

Retracts:

I'm to the point I need to buy some myself and have decided to wait on the new e-flite 60 size electric retracts...They "look" good...I love the thought of NO extra equipment needed except the retracts themselves....No airtank and plumbing or No additional servos and linkage to deal with...."Plug and Play" so to speak...Kewl!! [8D]
I like the theory and am looking forward to seeing how they actually work...I'll buy a set when they become available provided I can afford them at that time... ;)

Just thought I would mention them just in case you were not aware they were on the way....Here is a link to a video on the small one's which are currently available:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_s0vFIvfjo
(You'll notice late in the video he gives a little hint about the larger retracts... :D )

Spring Airs would be good that's for sure...

Have Fun...

Chuck

Thanks for the info re retracts.
I have checked out the You Tube Vid and will have a look at them when they release in June.
So after postulating over various motors, I am still contemplating the YS 1.20 FZ . I have a guy who has a brand new ( never Run) 10 year old motor with a tuned pipe.

Are there any issues that I need to look at with such an old motor.

Would there be any parts that would need to be replaced before firing it up?
Also how much bench time does it need before I can out in it the plane to fly?

Almost ready to start building

Cheers Greg

RE: MK Silent build

The YS 1.20 "FZ" was the last variation of the YS 1.20 engines...It's a good engine....If it's truly a Brand New ***Never Run*** you should be good to go...If he ran it or if it's even seen fuel I would recommend having it serviced by YS Parts and Service prior to running...You might wanna get a few spare diaphragms, diaphragm gaskets, regulator plungers and plunger springs just to have on hand...OS type F glo-plugs...

Have you ever run YS engines before?? There are YS lovers and there are YS haters...I'm a YS lover and have pretty much used YS engines only since I've been flying RC...I have five 4 cycle and several 2 cycle YS engines...I learned early on my basic principals for being a happy YS owner...

1) Use fresh fuel (Synthetic 2 cycle fuel with 20% oil - Nitro whatever you want, I use mostly 15-20% nitro across the board) (I have just got a new DZ engine which I will use 30% heli fuel)
2) Once it's set up don't touch anything!! (You may occasionally adjust the high speed needle a click or two but that's about it)
3) Leave the Brass Screw Alone!! (The Brass Regulator Screw that is)
4) Run the #*!! out of it...Don't let it sit...If your going to store it use Ultra Oil for long term storage...(some folks use Mobile-1 Synthetic motor oil)
5) No petroleum based products!! They will wreak havoc on the silicone diaphragm and o-rings...
6) Run it a little richer than you think it should be (especially early on...You can back off a little once it breaks in but still run it on the "rich side" of tolerance...If your glo plug fails it's too lean...Well maybe once a year is OK but you shouldn't have to replace glo plugs hardly ever)
7) Use only good quality fuel tank's and hardware...Wrap the fuel tank with re-unforced packing tape or duct tape...
8) Release the tank pressure after running the engine or after every flight...(You Will learn this...One way or the other you will learn...)
9) Run the fuel out of the engine at the end of every session... (Or Else...)

Don't spend too much time bench running it for break in...A tank or so just to make sure it's reliable then go fly...Keep it rich for at least two gallons of fuel...**If** you need to touch the regulator screw adjust it in Very Small Increments (1/16 to 1/8 turn)...Use your normal prop or slightly lighter loaded for break in...Vary the throttle some not just wide open the whole time...Let it cool completely between flights...

There are some pretty good articles out there on the web about running YS engines...Troy Newman has some good info on his site plus there are others...I learned on my own but I'd recommend reading what the experts have to say...With YS engines there is a thin line between being a lover or a hater...Being a hater IMO is normally self induced...So do a little reading and you'll be a lover...

Enjoy!!

Chuck

I have started building, it was a cold wet day here today, so the shed beckoned me.Still undecided on the motor, Jett is great but the cost diff in Kiwi dollars is a bit tough.Hopefully I can load in some photos.[img][/img]

RE: MK Silent build

I understood that there is a special MK soft mount to go on those rails,
So the guys tell me from the Model shop.
I was going to clarify that with them next week.
It is slowly coming together.
The plan is very old and a couple of the drawings are a bit faded.
The rubber bands holding the balsa togethre have glued themselves to bits of balsa.... so it is fairly old.
canopy is perfect.....
Still contemplating the motor though, I will probqbly go with those new electric retracts from E Flight, they look good.

really? because my OS 1.40 does not line up just sitting on the rails on my wild beat. i have thought about a solution to that but haven't got that far. please keep us informed. thanks.

This is the type of mount that I used in mine. Its an MK soft mount. Most of the kits came with 2 metal bars that acted like spacers under the motor lugs to get it to the correct height (YS drilled).

RE: MK Silent build

Is there any difference in the lug screw spacing between say YS 2 strokes (the 45 and 61 used the same spacing) and the YS 120's? In other words, do the 60 size mounts work for YS 120's as well?

David.
