So , it rained again and inbetween painting the bathroom and stacking wood on the fire I did some more.
It is ready to have top and bottom glued on now.The a rough guide sanding to get shape.
This is the first plane I have built since I was a teenager. ( mainly control line and Free Flight... and the obvious Chuck gliders)
I am enjoying it.
Sitting in my shed waiting is a 103 inch Bud Nosen P51 Mustang half kit. So once this is done , that will be the next project.
Cheers Greg

Greg, how are you going to control the rudder? I have a CF pushrod installed on my WB but am thinking i need to switch to a pull/pull assembly.

vskiwi 06-07-2010 05:00 AM

RE: MK Silent build

Was planning to go Pull Pull also, I just like the control.
My Plan is a bit faded in the section about the tailplane, It has a mechanism to set incidence after build...
Does your wild beat have this??
Greg

greg, yes the wild beat has a removable stab and an incidence adjuster built in. feel free to pm me about my experience. also, the joker build (i think) by the guy from new zealand has the same assembly. sorry, it's late and i don't remember the member's name either.

David,

are you talking about Tarquin's Beetle build down in New Zealand? The Beetle does indeed have an incidence adjustor as well.

By the way, I was fortunate to recently score an MK Wild 7 - very nice looking ship. The level of prefabrication of the balsa parts is down right beautiful!

I believe it's the predecessor to your Wild Beat David which in turn was the predecessor to Akiba's later Beat On. It's a smaller ship (71" span) for 120 4c like Greg's Silent. It actually has very similar construction to the Silent from what I've seen so far. It is also designed for a loooong pipe which runs aft of the wing TE for which there is a beautiful little glass scoop to finish off the tunnel nicely. I suspect the Silent has the same under the wing setup.

I can take some pictures of the plan if anyone is interested although they are blue prints and somewhat faded.

David.

Hello Greg

The pictures from my beetle build might help with your build. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_68..._1/key_/tm.htm

Cheers
Tarquin

RE: MK Silent build

Thanks for that Tarquin.
That rear stab had me very confused.
Also if you follow the plan by number , it wouild have you fibreglass in the fin and have no access for the incedence mecahnism.
So I am dry fitting things and sort an order to finalise.
It appear to be designed to allow the stab to be removed for transport?

DHal22
do you have any pictures of the plan, particularly the stab .
My plan is yellow and faded and I cannot see the Stab details
There are some fine details that I cannot read at all.
Seeing ithers builds helps, but if you have the silent plan, a photo would be great.
Cheers Greg

Cheers Greg

Well after much ummmming and ahhhing I went with a YS 1.20 4 stroke YS FZ 120 Brand new never run with Pipe and header for approx $500 Kiwi....about $350 US.
I so was going to do the Jett , but tis came up again and I couldn't resist it.
The ballistic Crew at the model shop ( who are like the 2 wise men), reckon I can play with them, but as a second rate citizen alongside their HANNO powered classics.
We will see!!!!!! I do have a fair bit to learn from them.
Back building after a few busy weeks off.
David did you manage to find that plan. ( not hassling but I cannot read mine, especially around the stab area)
Cheers Greg:D

now for some close ups. i took them at a slight angle, trying to avoid using the flash so as not to white the photo out. let me know if you need more.

Hi David
Thanks heaps for that, I was having a wee bit of trouble with not being able to see it.
Engine arrived last week ( Nice) , am going to wait for those new electric retracts due in late July.
About to sheet the stab and then start the wing.
Will post some photos soon.
Cheers Greg

are the photos enough to help out? it sounds like they are but making sure.

vskiwi 07-13-2010 05:47 AM

RE: MK Silent build

Yes thanks David the photos of plans helped alot so far.
Having not build a plane for a while, I am sort of doing it all agin for the first time.
Last time I built it was Balsa Cement. Tissue and dope
So CA and Alliphatic glue make things alot different.

Was wondering if there was a way to hold down the sheeting on the stab whilst glueing, especially when doing the second side ( effectivly closing it all in)
I could pin it, but was thinking that rubber bands may be OK, or weights.

Do you do it all in one go or do leading edge first?

dhal22 07-13-2010 06:49 PM

RE: MK Silent build

others may have a better idea but i purchased model ship planking clamps for my wing sheeting. they are available from micromark:

Here are a few more pictures
Have completed the stab ( mostly)
Just begun the wings and the fuse is well under way.
Awaiting the retracts before I can consider sheeting.
YS 1.20 FZ with pipe in the shed, got the MK soft mount.
COOOOOL.

RE: MK Silent build

Has anyone used the e-flite 60 size electric retracts yet and if so what has been your experience so far with them.
I am planning to use them on the Silent.
Cheers

vskiwi 09-04-2010 06:34 PM

RE: MK Silent build

Retracts arrived, sounds like I could be the first one in NZ with them.
Look good, hooked them up and operated well.
They are nice an smooth and are gentle in their movements.
Look forward to getting them in and working
Might be a bit fiddly sorting them instead of the MK ones. ( especially the nose wheel)
Now I can get on further into the wings.
Cheers
