Modified Curare Build!

I do what I do, I just can't help myself. I had a Curare a long time ago and I had to add weight in the tail to balance so this one is streched 7".

I really wanted a sleek steamlined plane. I didn't want my engine exposed, so I widened the front end about an inch or so to keep the pipe inside. I'm making a custom header to connect to the pipe, but for now I just used a stock side header for spacing.

I am building a fiberglass cover for the pipe in this picture and I may extend it in a new splash to include the canopy.

Here's a shot sitting on the landing gear! You can better see the length. It is as long as the wingspan. It's about 7" over stock length.

OK, I thought I better do a rear shot. I'm getting ready to do the turtle deck and the rest of the tail/rudder etc.

Well what do you think? So far . Ok, on with it here I have built the rear turtle deck the bottom and the tail. It's startiing to look like a plane now.

Looks great so far! I'm a big fan of taking some of the great old designs and adding more modern aspect ratios and techniques. Did you keep the original airfoil or use something more modern?

frequent flyer 06-12-2010 09:16 AM

RE: Modified Curare Build!

I used the original airfoil .

I just scratch built an old 1/2A Pacer pattern plane from 1973 and streatched the tail and used a modern 9% airfoil. Wow what a difference it made from the ones I flew back then.

Hey frequent flyer

Way freaking Cool! Never thought about a rear exhaust Curare. That does it! Now I have to have one. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...sn/biggrin.gif

Hanno Prettner did. He called it the [link={akamaiimageforum}/upfiles/192340/Om33261.jpg]Magic[/link] and won the 1981 World Championship with it :) :) :)

Best regards,

George

Geogre,

I would agree that they both have anhedral stabs but they are quite different in fuse.

Cool post Roguedog! It's good to see the Curare and Magic profiles side by side like that.

What brand of header is that on the OS .61 SF? Neat configuration. TIA

Just curious, what was your reasoning for adding 7" to the fuselage, instead of say 2 or 3"? TIA

RE: Modified Curare Build!

The orignal is nose heavy that I had. It was stubby looking and most of my current pattern planes are even longer than their wingspans. To me it looks better, balances better, shoud roll better, better is what I like to do.

That is a little header made by Great Planes.

i believe that header is actually made or sold by top flite for their war-bird kits and arfs and it is slick for getting the pipe or canister in close

You may be right, I bought it at Tower.

not wanting to rain on your parade, but how far can you modify the shape of a curare and still call it a curare? A philosophical question really.
