Well, go ahead and tell me. Now just how Ironic is it that I'm the president of The AMPs club. Actually this is the first time I've seen the pic and I knew what it was right away. First of all, the person that took the picture is not into pattern. He was in Muncie for the IMAC nationals and the webmaster who posted the pics probably hadn't seen a vintage pattern plane in 2005. AMPs will be hosting their third ever pattern contest in January. I'm the CD.

Most people in the US have a hard time recalling important US history, let alone pattern history. The people interested in vintage pattern today is so small, it's no wonder no one remembers the Orion. I remember because the group I started flying with back in '82 where all pattern flyers and my instructor must have had 5 or 6 examples of the Orion hanging from the rafters in his garage. He still flew one every now and then.

Chris,

I mounted the Saito on it's side because virtually all the advice I got from other WM Intruder flyers indicated that was the way to go. That advice was not specific to the Saito. It should be valid for any engine... upright or sideways is usually OK. With the Intruder, upright would not look particularly good.

Thanks Chief,
I was wondering specifically about the Magnum but I figure you're right. As far as the fuel delivery and vertical cg, it probably is all the same. Thanks for the posts and the pics.

Hi Vince,
Don't you love that radial on the bike? Thanks again to you for all of the great pics and ideas on the Intruder. I'm going to get a chance to go to the Orlando contest in November and will go to Florida in late Sept or so and start on the Intruder. My dad's flying buddy is a fast builder and he's helping me so it should go well. Will you be able to go?

Chris...

Chris - I should be there, made the one two years ago, and last year down with very bad cold. Where will you be in Florida on your visit ? Do you need anything for the Intruder to complete it ?

At my parents in Punta Gorda.
I won't know what I need until I get there. I have an engine, and an ARF that has the control tubes removed and all film except the white stripped off. It's complete except for hardware, probably. There I have no idea. The guys say there is a good hobby shop in Ft. Myers so I'll probably be OK.
Say, while we're at it, what diameter spinner does it take?

RE: world models intruder

The plastic spinner provided with the WM Intruder is 2 3/4" dia.

Tube removal has been completed for my Intruder as well. I was a little surprised at how easily they came out after all that worrying. Just a couple of holes in the bottom to repair after I get the planned pushrods installed.

Hi Greg,
Thanks. I'll see if I can get something to work on my Magnum.

Vince,

Seems like it's been slow going for me. Had to redo the elevator pushrod three times before I got the free movement I wanted. Finally finished all the pushrods yesterday. Sealed up the access holes in the bottom of the fuselage too. Roll of "Intruder" orange covering was delivered a couple of days ago, so it should start moving along a little better now. Unfortunately, "work" restricts the time I have to "play" with the Intruder. I have a "retirement" part-time job (M/W/F) teaching at a local community college. Even so, I'm hopeful that next weekend will be maiden flight time, weather permitting. I'll definitely post the results as soon as I can. Thanks for checking up on me.

Well... didn't get in the air today. The Intruder is basicly ready to go except for tx programming and setting the stab incidence. A few photos attached...

Greg - Nice looking 'Truder you got there! One suggestion though, seal the front of the canopy with some pinstriping tape. The airflow will sooner or later rip the canopy off. Don't ask how I know. Good luck with your maiden!

FB,

I did seal the canopy with "canopy" glue, but I see the wisdom of your advice. I'll do as you suggest. Thanks.

I have watched a 4 stroke .91 powered Intruder flown by an obviously accomplished pilot once. Very smooth and graceful plane. Should be a fun plane Greg.

Thanks David...

I'm really looking forward to getting some air time. The 4-stroke is absolutely new to me. I've had nothing but 2-strokes up to now. A little bit nervous about that....

Pretty model, Chief. Look forward to your 4 stroking experience. Mine will be my first, too.

RE: world models intruder

I seem to have a little issue that Airborne Models cannot answer. I need to touch up a small area on the WM Intruder 90R cowl but I'd like to know if the factory paint can be safely painted over. Has anyone else had this issue and found that paint compatability either is or is not something I should be concerned about?

Chief - I think you are probably the only guy that is going to see that little paint chip. Use any fuel proof dope. When is it going to get airborne?

RE: world models intruder

I wish it was only a paint chip Vince. I didn't get the hole for needle valve access in the right spot so I need to patch and redo. I'll just enlarge the hole for this weekend and repair the hole next week. I'm concerned about the paint because I had a problem with a previous airplane where Klass Kote separated and blistered. This one is different, and is probably OK to paint over, but I just wanted to be sure so I don't make the problem worse. I'm also having some difficulty getting the dual aileron servos set up properly (Spektrum)... too much movement and centering not right.

I'm hoping that I can get some air time tomorrow or Sunday. Weather forcast is better for tomorrow... no rain (finally), and less windy than the forcast for Sunday.

Did you save any of the scrap pieces when you made the opening for the cylinder? You could use it as a test piece for paint compatibility.

RE: world models intruder

Excellent idea FB... but no, those scrap pieces are already gone. I will have to just hope for the best when I touch it up. For the weekend, I'll just leave it a oversized hole and get some flying in. The previous problem I mentioned didn't show up until that airplane was out in the hot sun for a while.

Or...

Put a decal over the chip if it is in a favorable position.

Not that simple Ed. (see my post #169). I need to repair an oversize hole and repaint the black portion of the cowl.

Oops! Sorry about that. At least I was hoping for simplicity.

My two Intruders are buried in the wife's business inventory in our two car garage. Sure wish I could get to them and work on them.

Ed,

I think you're going to have to make it a "project" to extract your planes from the other "inventory". I'm just wrapping up all the little issues that need final attention. Everything will be going on the charger real soon. I plan to take the plane out to the flying field tomorrow and see if the engine gives me any problems. If all is well, maybe we'll get it into the air. If not, hopefully I can resolve anything else that needs attention and get the plane into the air on Sunday.

Greg
