Larger Classic Pattern Plane
 

Hello Gents,

Lately I've been thinking about trying to find a larger classic pattern plane. The motor I already have for the proposed plane is a NIB YS140 Limited. If I cannot find something I like, I may consider selling the motor. So what do you guys think? Any recommendations for me?:eek::eek:

By the looks of that EU-1A the 140 would make it an easy flyer without any thought to energy management. You could even slather on a nice full paint job.

Might try to find a kit or built model of the Summit 120 on any of the later (pre turnaround) models designed for the 120 4c. Although the 140L might be a lot for it, you might also look at the SL-1. I had an SL-1 (photo below) about 6 years ago with the YS 120 in it and it was one of the best flying planes I ever owned. Put the 140 in it with header from Central hobbies and a muffler from Hatori or a CF muffler from ES Composites.

I used to have a 140L and it was so much stronger than the 140 sport but I lost the plane (current 2 meterish size pattern plane) when the NIMH battery failed. Engine was inverted and the plane hit right side up at about a 45 degree nose down angle. It hit only rock in the area and broke the cylinger off of the case just above the mounting lugs. The 140L is a really nice engine and you might want to keep it in case you find a plane later on.:)

Yeah Dave, you are going to have to find one of the first 4-stroke planes or one of the last pre-widebody designs if you want a plane for that motor that doesn't look like a bloated dead whale. I can't remember what prop I ran on my 140L, but 17x9 or so rings a bell. So you have to take prop size into consideration. I think you should just let me have the motor for my P-51...:D

PS. that summit above is a gorgeous airplane!

I forgot all about the EU1A. I'll have to keep it in mind when Dan starts making his kits. Besides, if I show up at the field with an EU1A, one of my fellow club members will just roll over and die right there on the spot.

You already have more than enough motor in your P-51. What do you want to do, rip the wing off?...:D I will have to agree with you about the plane in Ed's post above, it is outstanding ! ! !

I think there was a Bridi design called something like Mama Mia - published in Model Builder. As I recall, this was a fairly large design.

As Mike mcConville would say it is a scaled up version of the Desire 60... I don't have any photos handy I will look when I get home in a week to see if there are any in the file..but here is a link for the 60... It has a plug in wing, belly pan, canopy, and the fuse... there will be a few options also.... hmmm who might have the molds :)

Steve Stricker's Excalibur. I don't have a photo at the moment, but somebody here might. Swept wings, jet-like appearance, originally designed for a YS120AC; so your YS 140 would work very nicely. The only problem will be to find a kit... I think I read (here on RCU) about somebody having the original molds (maybe in Maryland somewhere). There are lots of 'coming soon' teasers from classic pattern potential kitmakers who may have the molds????
There are several nice airplanes from Dick Hanson which I believe are still available from a gentleman in Utah (Elan, Excess, Ariel, EMC2).
I've always liked the looks of the Hydeout, too.
MK Blue Angel VR-7, Wild Beat, Wild Beat 777 - if you can find one...

If you like building, you can look into the Boxer 120. I have a set of plans. Basically a scaled up boxer 90.

Good morning Gentlemen,

Thanks for all the suggestions. I would have never thought there were this many planes to choose from. I found a picture of Mike McConville's Desire 60 and a 120 size is definitely one to consider. Since I've only been doing this for about eight or nine years, I'm not familiar with some of the planes that were mentioned so any pictures would be greatly appreciated. I also know some of the kits mentioned are going to be difficult, if not impossible to find, but sometimes looking is part of the fun.

Blue Jay is still cutting Joe Bridi designs. I had my RCS 1.40 gasser in the 80 inch Kaos and it was a wild machine. I have also used the YS 1.40 sport in the CG Extra, WOW!!!!

Great flying plane, but it took a really strong engine to make it work.

Your engine would be perfect, you won't be disappointed.

The EU-1 is fine, but for an earlier classic designed as a large plane, you might want to look into the King Altair from Jeff Petroski at Homeandhobbysolutions. I have flown my "Kings" on an OS.91 and a Saito 125. Both engines worked, but were not overpowered. A 140 would not be tioo much engine.

In a few months Jeff will introduce Ed Kazmirski's large-scale gem the SIMLA. This plane was designed in 1965 and has a 102" wingspan. It was featured in the August 2010 Model Aviation article KAZ!! The prototype model is nearing completion, and will be featured in an upcoming issue of Model Aviation in a construction article

Are you familiar with the Prophecy?? It's a early 90's era 2 meter airplane designed around the YS 1.20SC which was the choice engine at the time. It would make a nice home for a 1.40L...
