The pic in the last reply is out of sorts when you click on it. It seems to be out of focus and the pixels are low or something makes all the lines crazy. but the origianal, ahemm--I stole it from was perfect. the down sizing messed it up. Or I'm doing something wrong.( which is probably the case. Anyway, hope it gets easy. Robt.

Thumbs
I like the thumbnail better, but an auto rezize on the attachment page would be an asset. It is such a pain to always try to find a program to resize. If there was a way to do it automaticaly, that would be great.
As for full size, maybe if a user could select in his profile his own preference for how he views a thread he could select what ever suits his connection.

Thumb nail, but what I would like to see is much larger file size or res. size, up to where you don't have to resize from a Digital Camera, set at low res.

Thumbnails
I like thumbnails. I'd much rather scroll down a page without the big pictures there. There's less scrolling and the page looks cleaner. I think it works great as is, but I wouldn't mind if the thumbnails were a tad bit bigger. Thumbnails are much faster for the modem users and modem users still outnumber broadband users.

On the new forums (yet another reason why they blow away today's RCU!) you can upload multiple images in a single post. We have the thumbnailing working on a single image and now are working on all images getting thumbnailed in the process.
Also, we will look to allow any size image upload and use smart resizing as we do in the new classifieds and auctions. With smart resizing we can size to a max size for you and optimize for the web so the filesize is as small as possible while preserving quality. This isn't in place yet but my intentions are to code for this so you can upload any size image and we do the rest.
Last...we will make an option to choose full size or thumbnails in viewing prefs with thumbs being the default.
All this may or may not be in place at launch time but I don't see why we cannot have it functioning within a month or so if it isn't. This strategy would solve just about every problem I think.

I like the thumbnail too. But I sure hate when you click on the thumbnail to see the full size pic and the pic turns out to be the same size as the thumbnail was in the first place. But that's the posters fault not RCU.

Since you are up to your armpits in new code from the sound of it, why not add image size as a preference?
Default to the current thumbnail size and enourage users to upsize at will.

Ok...I think on the new system we have the smart loading working. What this will do is allow you to upload any size image and if it exceeds our maximum width (1024x768) we will resize it and optimize it for the web. We also create a thumbnail which will show in the post. A user toggle to show full size or thumbnail may be ready for the launch on the new site.
One funny think this thread brings up is the concept of change and human nature. When I changed RCU's colors from the purple to the current blue a lot of people freaked out and complained. Now I don't hear a word about it. What is new becomes familiar. These thumbnails (do a search on RCU for "thumbnails") also were met with outrage when I brought them on. Members didn't like the "change" and wanted it the other way. I knew there were benefits to this and that this was a natural reaction that we as humans always have to "change". ONe guy accused me of worrying about disk space as the reason to do thumbs. Unfortunately that logic was way off...now I had to store the real image PLUS the thumbs! Ok..people will complain about any change (even color!).
In light of this please take advantage of the beta tests we have coming this week for the new RCU. It will allow you to become accustomed with what is "new" and find your way around before the change over. You will find that it won't take long to learn your way around and use the new tools at your disposal. It blows away everything RCU is today and everything RC Airport is today. I will post a sitewide sticky when the beta site is ready for testing. Once open you can explore, provide suggestions and report bugs of any kind to us. Thumbnail features will be one of many features to test out!

I think the max width should be 640. From my reading, my understanding is that screen widths of 800 pixels are still VERY common (I'm on one now). I don't think I've ever seen a picture on RCU that would suffer if shrunk to 640 pixels wide.

I run a 1600x1200 display. Sometimes the thumbnails are as big as the full size photos. If we keep it this way there should be some feedback to the poster showing them the full size pictures they post. 100x80 full size photos don't show too well.
Thanks

Keep the thumbnails, and link to full-size for those wishing a larger picture.
