Default Commercial Drones in the News!

Okay guys, here's more fodder for the FAA! This is the actual e-news headline: "Drones deployed against Japan's whaling fleet Activist: 'We now have an advantage we have never had before — eyes in the sky". The animal rights activists have with the help of private finances purchased a surveillance drone that they are using to (at the moment) keep tabs on the Japanese whaling fleet. Now I am not inclined to get into the legalities or animal rights diatribes, but arming these people with a drone that for the present provides only surveillance is asking for trouble. When do you think that someone will get the idea to use the drone to harass this fleet, possibly putting other people at physical risk? THIS is where we stand to suffer the most from the FAA and now other international bodies! As I thought, there appears to be no conscience in the sUAV community and if you've got the bucks then you can have the technology. JUST MY HONEST OPINION! The tree huggers are now in the RC arena, what do we (or can we) do about it?

Happy Flying!

Lopman:

I don't have a lot of problems with selling the green nuts a rc drone. Our political people need to man up and go with the rest of the world in stopping the distruction of the whale species. Its not like we have any real need for their bodies. If the government gave them a satelite it would be a whole different reaction. I do have a problem with a lot of the green issues. Such as global warming when green leaning professors are caught stacking the computer models, and how big business green has been allowed to become. Billions to solar pannels, and electric cars, outlawing oil development along with hidro-electro facilities. When gas gets to $7-8.00 a gallon and we can not afford to eat because agricluture is denied water in favor of the fish, we might wake up a little. The fish thing has allready happened in Oregon and Fresno, Ca. Its a very long discussion we should be having, but not here?

The point is that some people have a conscience. Have you watched the movie "The Cove", which won the 2010 Academy Award for best documentary? If not, I suggest you do that.

I suggest you go eat more "surstromming" (No Moderator that is not a flaming term) Red. I was not making a political or socio type statement. I was pointing to the fact that this issue could have negative repercussions on us as an RC community. The people in government are not stopping whaling but they are looking at RC in its many uses and ways to possibly curtail or eliminate our freedom to promote and participate in this great hobby. Don't Hi-Jack a thread to turn it into a political soap box for Greenpeace.

Happy Flying!

"Surströmming" is is a dish from the north-eastern part of Sweden consisting of fermented Baltic herring. Back in the old days the fermentation process was used as a means of preserving the fish when brining food was quite expensive due to the cost of salt. Nowadays it is produced in very small quantities and eaten by rather few people.

As for hijacking the thread I had no intention of doing that, but I found your statements "there appears to be no conscience in the sUAV community" and "The tree huggers are now in the RC arena, what do we (or can we) do about it?" rather derogatory. Almost any piece of technical equipment can be used for good or bad purposes and I DO NOT condone the latter.

For those of you interested in the actual story it can be found here:

Loopman, FYI the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, which is based in Friday Harbor, Washington, USA is not the same thing as Greenpeace, which is based in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Loopman, get a hold!  Even a 10 lb. UAV presents little threat to a 100+ton whaler.

RC gear can be used for lots of things. In this case it just might do some good and IMO is better than having a having a boat rammed, as has happened in the past. Plus, it's not my job to regulate who buys what.

Ironically, the activists use a JR radio in that trailer.

As this is stirring up the hornets nest, I am closing it. Thanks Dave
