Reminds me of the movie "The Shawshank Redemption" with Tim Robbins as Andy Dufresne and Morgan Freeman as Ellis Boyd "Red", where Andy slowly digs a channel out of the jail, tossing the rocks from his pocket every day in the courtyard.

What is interesting is my parents have a basement just like this guys. The soil is very hard clay and when the previous owners built the house they did not dig out the basement, just a crawl space. My brothers and I and my father hand dug about 1000 square feet of the clay that was between 4' deep to 8' deep, many, many wheelbarrow loads where hauled out.

Did you check out the Olympics? They were using model Mini's to retrieve discus, javelin and hammer. Really cool.
