How many dont fly in the winter time?
I have no desire to fly when the wind is blowing 20mph, when it looks like its going to rain, when the temperature drops below 55-60*, and especially not when theres anything on the runway other than grass.
Our club has winter fun fly's, but I typically watch. I would prefer to spend my summers flying, and my winters in the workshop.

Well I would be off to the field today too......except here in the Bay Area it is raining and miserable.
My first day of vacation and I can't fly! Oh well, I guess I will just go to the garage and do some more work on my Somethin' Extra Kit that is on the bench.

How many dont fly in the winter time?
I was born and raised in the midwest (Omaha) and I froze the first 28 winters of my life. Now I live in Northern California and can fly almost any time I want. If it rains hard I fly the simm.

No way Jose!!!!!!! I like to fly, but I hate freezing my family jewels off even more. When one has joint problems the last thing they need is to turn into a popsicle flying a plane. Nope this is building time for me and playing on the different sims I have.

wintertime flying
Here in Alabama it can actually get pretty cold in winter with the wind blowing. Get this: I can go out before daylight to go deer hunting when the temp is like 15-20 degrees and freeze my buns off(hasnt been that cold here yet this year...thank God!!) but I usually wont fly until it warms up to high 50's or warmer. I guess I am like Art even tho I just turned 40(no offense Art!!!!hehe), all the years of playing softball have gotten to the joints!!!
We just aint what we used to be, are we Art???

So long as it is'nt raining.
Cold don't bother me a bit . I actually like to fly in the winter .
Engines seem to have more power and there is not so many people. I'd fly in the rain if I could figure out how to keep everything (radio , ground gear) dry. People do chuckle at my artic carhartt's though.

How many dont fly in the winter time?
I just ordered 3 sets of skis. Built a set last year, me and a buddy had such a blast one sunny 15 degree day in the front yard with a profile him and a couple more are getting their own.
We would come inside to warm up between flights which made it nice. Harry had on some slick soled cowboy boots. It was almost as much fun watching him walk as flying!
Hey Paul!
My bestest buddie's all growd up girls are staying at my daughter's house. They just got in from Cedar rapids! His new house is to cramped.
Small world huh??

Nice place here! Glad to see a lot of the old gang around.
The weatherman says we "may" have some snow for Christmas. If we do I will post some pics here of the fun.
See you at the DOGS Paul!

Wind is my friend
Out here the Northeastern blows really cold - but it's a blast to fly in. Makes everything so much more dynamic. Frozen finger crosswind landing in 30+ knots is a hoot - but it takes a toll on your constitution. I have a wind plane now, that i don't care about too much so a major write-off wouldn't break my heart - but getting up there and flying backwards into the wind is really challenging. Try vertical landings and see if you can get your roll-out to under a few feet.
Got to go sloping today on a spit called Semiahmoo ( "semy-ahh-moo" ) out into the Pacific with my trusty gentle lady. Had a bit of an offshore breeze and flew up and down the beach on the inside of the harbour. Crystal clear air, incredible backdrop of snow convered mountains, 8 year old daughter kept busy picking up shells and dead crabs and I froze my pitooties off.
Gotta love it here.

Cold
Yeah, sometimes we have to put on a long sleeve shirt, its a killer. the problem for us is one front after the other, 2 days before the wind is blowin like crazy out of the south from the gulf, then 2 after its blowin harder from the north. It aint the cold, its the wind.

Cold Flying Update
Well, now that I've spewed on the virtues of winter flying in the PNW, I did manage to get out today with that 15 kt northeaster and 35 degrees - and a few issues were clarified given that it was quite numbing.
The ground is harder when it's frozen
Take a lawn chair - its hard to stand when you can't feel your feet
I watched my best engine run poor, and my poor engine ran like a watch
Everything about about taxiing in a tailwind is true, and stabs are brittle when they're frozen
The wind seems stronger when it's cold, and colder when it's windy
It's hard to keep your front warm when your backs always to the sun
You actually have to look for missing fingers after needle valve adjustments
Batteries in the cold are like me before my morning coffee
Elastic bands aren't
Exhaust residue and molasses have more in common than in summertime - bring a scraper
Cold dense air and a manic headwind make elevator trim redundent.
Hope this helps - will I go back? - you betcha! A word of caution - don't go after leaving the planes in the garage all night at sub-freezing temps. Give them a warm-up prior and check inside for stiff little mice babies.

Winter explained
Thanks Hircflyer . . . rub it in.
Winter is the time when your coconuts need extra protection, and you have to make sure that your bananna is not exposed or it will turn brown and drop off . . .
