Default An incredable Picture

This may be slightly off topic, but this is one of the most amazing pictures I have ever seen.

It was shot from the Space Shuttle Columbia on it's last mission.

It is western Europe. You can see UK and Scotland toward the upper left. Apparently, the white areas off to the left are clouds.

More likely they are Greenland and Iceland.

That is really cool. If it weren't for the day/night line, I'd have assumed you lifted it from Google Earth(awesome program BTW).

Yep, white areas are Greenland and Iceland...

The shadow is proof of an alien ship arriving to take over Earth... just like in the documentary "Indpendence Day".

The photo is a fake. Here's a page that describes it.
http://www.snopes.com/photos/sunset.asp
Regardless of how the photo was done, though, it is really cool.

This isn't a photo. There are no clouds in the image, contrast between day and night is too low, and the ocean floor is visible.

well... don't you guys think the transition area (penumbra?) is too sharp and the geometry ain't right? The dark side is brighter than I expected too but then they can enhance it right? I've never been up there afterall... Africa seems to have frozen over and there is very little clouds over the entire region. And what are all those funny shades in the ocean?

Great picture, but doesn't the sun rise in the East?

Wouldn't that mean the area in shadow should be to the left of the picture, not the right?

the sun sets to the east..
the earth turns "westwise" (not real word)

which means it should be night for the people on the east first..
which means that is a sunset,

never thought the lights will show that much though ..

Just depends on which way the world spins. Ya know, Minn did say it was an "incredable" picture, and it certainly appears not to be credible...

I think he was saying the sun sets in the eastern portion of a continent first. Think about it...when it's 10PM in New York, it's 7PM in California. It's darker to the east.

First clue that the picture is a fake is the shuttle orbits at 120-200 miles. No way a picture like that would come from an orbit that low. If it was real, it's from a geo sat at 23,000 out. Plus, Columbia went down in late winter/early spring. The constant sunlight in the northern polar region would make that a late summer shot.

Erm, which means the sun has set earlier in the East, which means the sun sets in the west.

Or, if you look West you see the sun setting, not rising. That's why, for instance, all the things related to death in Egypt, like the tombs, are on the West bank of the Nile and the things related to life (temples etc) are on the East bank. They thought the sun setting in the West was like the sun setting on people's lives.

Probably,

Are you sure that's the real Earth?

I don't remember seeing a big curved bit of brass stretching all the way to the North Pole with numbers on it when I have flown over it going to Europe from LA.

Course it's real. There is a steel rod that extends all the way through our core that connects to the brass. How do ya think we've managed to spin all these years billions of years without getting all 'wobbly'?
