Default Wind Sock

Our flying field needs a wind sock and I thought I'd be cool and donate one. Problem is, I don't know where to get one. The LHS was no help. Anybody out there know where I can get a wind sock?

No 'traditional' orange socks here! Some cool stuff, though.

You might give a call to your local airport.
They probably get know of some suppliers you might try.
Sportys Pilot shop has them, but they are pricey.

Default Sporty's

Contact Sporty's Pilot Shop and they can get you one and I don't feel the price is too much for what you get. I guess everything is realitive, but these are wind socks used for a real airport and are designed to last a long time (i.e. a year or two on average depending on weather). Now, if you have to get the hardware on top of the wind sock, it can get expensive, but usually, the hardware will last for a long time. My parents live on a private strip in Georgia and the hardware is at least 25 years old and still in good condition.

You can even get them at Wal-Mart. They have them shaped like a fish, Canadian Flag etc etc. Just go wherever they have flags and you'll probably find one there.

Try WindTek at http://www.bestwindsocks.com. I bought one off of ebay that came from there. and they're prices are pretty comparitive. I bought a real small one that can mount to your field box. Kinda cool.

The one on AMA is $110.00 according to there site.

Check out also Aircraft Spruce and Specialty , they have a great selection of socks in all prices and sizes.

We use a piece of mylar ribbon tied to a stick on the far end of the runway, very sensitive and so far no one has stolen it...

Heh. I do the same thing when I'm slope soaring, but I use old VCR tape. Works great.
