I found an old thread with a few names like Roy Orbison, Jerry Reed, Bill Elliott, Paul Harvey...

Anybody got any names to drop?

Football star/actor Merlin Olsen made the cover of RCM years ago with his planes and helis; he was still playing for the Rams at the time. Lots of the NASCAR guys run RC cars; some got into aircraft also. JIM

The people I consider FAMOUS that fly "Miniature Aircraft" are people we all know that fly the TOC events.
I know what your are getting at, but the "celeb" people that fly are not advancing our hobby or helping us obtain flying fields.
Our own people are ... they are my Famous Hero's !

Burt Rutan is one of the best known Avation names there is. He started as a model aircraft builder, flyer and designer and holds/or held many records. A true pioneer in RC Flying.
He has gone on to design a mumber of world beater aircraft and most of his designs are totally "out of the box".

I remember that thread, and can not find it either with the search function.

(1) Tom Scholz (Lead Guitar, Rhythm Guitar, Keyboards, Bass, Miscellaneous instruments, Backing Vocals, Producer, Writer, Engineer, Arranger) of the Rock Band Boston. ( One of my fav Bands)

(2) Recording Artist/Rapper- DMX, is into some planes, and RC Cars. Some shown in his Music Video's and Biography on MTV. There was a thread on this too in the Car/truck section.

(3) "Vinny" Vincent Dimartino of Orange County Choppers is an RC'er, they show some RC flying on an episode. There was a thread on that too.

Thanks guys...

I'm working with some high school and junior high students and just wanted to have a few easily recognizable names to drop to get a little reaction from the kids and parents...

We are starting a program with the AFJROTC and CAP and have about a dozen cadets right now...but we will have a bunch more jr. high kids soon.

I was wondering also about astronauts, other pilots, etc. too...Burt Rutan...he's been in the spotlight lately

The OCC Boys do. Did anyone see the episode last Monday. The British military and them shooting a R/C plane down with rifles. LOL Paule or Mike could not hit the Sr. came up and shot it right down

While they're not necessarily famous, it seems there are lots of guys in here who flew for the military. My club's lead instructor flew fighters in the airforce.

Eddie Hill, the guy who used to drive the Super Shops NHRA top fuel dragster, and the first top fuel dragster driver in history to ever break into the 4 second 1/4 mile range, flies RC, and is a pretty capable 3D pilot from what I've read.

Yeah, Eddie is down in the Wichita Falls area. He comes to the swap meet down there every so often and will sell off his "excess" stuff. Most of his excess is usually in NIB condition!!! I've talked to him a few times, really good guy.

Eddie post here from time to time as well....you won't find two nicer people in the world than Eddie and Ercie Hill.

Baseball player Javy Lopez flies (Catcher, used to be with the braves), because he was on an episode of "celebrity hobbies" on the DYI channel a while back flying in his front yard and they interviewed him about for about 15 minutes.

The guy that taught me how to fly rc planes became his Lear pilot in the mid 90's. Probably has something to do with it as well.
