What Vehicle hauls you to the Field?

RE: What Vehicle hauls you to the Field?
Hi Guys - Glad you like the rack. I just measured the distance between the van walls above the rear arm rests. Arm rests support the sides and then I put the middle support I built in the middle. One or two bungy cords over the middle support rod hold the whole thing down. The only thing that is a little different is due to the width of it I have to slide it in through the middle (slider) doors and then scoot it on back on to the arm rest supports. I can put all of the Field Boxes and Fuel etc either up just behind the front seats if I have two 120 size in or use the right side if I only take one. When I take it out of the car I just hang it off the ceiling from some bicycle hooks I screwed into the rafters to get it out of the way. Hope these pictures help. I know some are the same as my first post but I didn't remember which ones they were. I tried to find a couple of shots with the planes loaded in the back after I made the modifications with the extra fuselage holder, but don't have any handy I guess. Main materials are 1" pvc and fittings and hot water line insulation for the padding. As mentioned before, on this one I did NOT glue the joints. I put it all together with the pipe seated as deep as I could force them into the fittings and then drilled them with a 1/16" bit and installed servo screws to keep them from slipping out. This was real handy when I went ot modify it and all I had to do was unscrew things and knock the fittings loose and redo them as I wanted.

I am currently studying some ancient Himalayan philosophies under the guidance of several Tibetian monks. When I complete the course of study I shall be able to instantaneously teleport myself and my planes and equipment to any flying site I wish! I will be able to control the local weather at the site so it will always be perfect! I will be able to influence the State and regional Lottery drawings, and horse races, and roulette tables so that will have virtually unlimited resourses to buy all the models my humble heart desires. I will live for a thousand years! I will be even more irresistable to beautiful women! I will also save time wasted on meals by being able to exist on a single grain of cooked brown rice a day! I might wake up and stop daydreaming!

Depends on the day and what I plan on flying... most days I have 1 pattern ship and a fomie in the back of my saturn SL2 (Yes you can fit a 2 meter ship in a saturn...barley, if you fold the front seat too) When I want to bring more planes or stay longer at the field... a class A Motorhome is the way to go... over 30 feet long, queen sized bed and plenty of room for all the planes I own (if I pack carefully)

I use a Ford 98 WindStar bought it new but after 2 different people at different times decided to redesign it for me.After the last redesign and I got it out of the shop I decided to trade it in,the Dealer did a CarFax report on it I found out the only person it was worth any thing to is me soo I kept it it was paid for,I took out the back seats makes a perfect airplane hauler. Now I keep all my stuff in it when I need to go to the field just load up planes ,if I get home late and decide not to clean out van it is no sweat if some fuel gets on the carpet who cares. It still rides and runs good it does not look bad either as long as you donot get too close to see the uneven seams or the different shades on red and evey thing kinda works right, but hell I am not perfect by a long shot why should I expect my car to be.

'99 Ford F-150 XLT Super cab with the 5.4L V8 and a hard tonnau cover. We were going to buy a 5th wheel travel trailer, which is why we got the 5.4L rather than the 4.6L V6, but that never happened, so now its more get-up-and-go when acclerating onto the freeway.

Life has had it's ups and down over the years. From the 5X10 trailer I made in college welding shop to the 20' Carson Trailer with the shower in the front pulled by the Chevy Silverado 350 and down to the '85 Cutlass Supreme and now back to a Carson 12' Trailer with the Dakota pickup. Always enough airplanes to fill anything I have to haul them with.

I just throw the planes in the back of my Chevy pickup. If I'm going on the highway sometimes I'll toss a chain over whatever plane(s) I'm taking so it won't fly out.

RE: What Vehicle hauls you to the Field?
I remember hearing about someone using a old hearse as a plane hauler. Used ones are usually dirt cheap, and they have nothing but space in the back. Years ago, I saw a thing in Model Airplane News or RCM where they had a Chevy station wagon that looked to be some kind of funeral vehicle conversion with the vinyl top and no rear windows, and it had an airplane chrome hood ornament. The whole inside of the car was converted just to carry airplanes. I wonder what kind of reaction you'd get if you rolled up to the field in one...

Hi Davidsai - I'm not at home to confirm, but I think it's a MA 15x7 3-blade on the front of a Saito 91. The spinner is a Tru-Turn. Like the combination for flight as well as looks.
