Have you ever noticed how flying bugs, like flies, are able to land upside down on the ceiling? How do they do that? Do they do a half roll or a half loop to land? Or do they just fly into the ceiling and grab on when they hit it? They make it look easy, but I have never been able to see exactly how they do it.

They fly fast and high, invert, tuck, half-gainer, two 360 summersaults and land on feet. (gee - I thought everyone knew that)

everyone knows that they stop in midair and do a hover then flip over and land.

This was in the latest AOPA Pilot. They can't fly upside down, so they reach up, grab the ceiling, and flip over once they get a good grip on it.

They fly up to the ceiling, and using the two front legs that just walked thru the gravy on your plate.. just before your fork put that gravy in your mouth... extend the feet over their heads, and using the adhesive qualities of the gravy, secure a foothold.
Then using dexterity similar to that of Britney Spears stripping on stage for those pubescent teen age boys, rotate their loathsome bodies (not hers) anti-backwards to latch on to the ceiling with the other legs which are also slimed with your gravy.

But how do we know for sure they can't fly upside down? They can fly backwards and sideways, why not upside down.
