Default R/C web hosting ideas...

In addition to all the 'other' things on the to do list I've been thinking about starting a small web hosting site for RCers. This could be clubs, businesses or private. Price would be cheap, perhaps around $10 month depending on usage, you would use your own domain name (www.joeflier.com) or what ever, be responsible for your own site or have someone else do it and you would also be part of a community that would be linked to a main site where you can find other businesses, tips, and forums. I would not have a forum, this has already been mastered by RCU but links to others.

This is still in the 'thinking' stage but I wanted to toss it out to you guys and see what you think.

Feedback is appreciated.

Thanks,

Kelvin.

Web hosting is already available for under $10 month..100MB..2GB transfer, so I don't see the need.

The Community aspect would be nice, but you're better off just hunting around for web sites, and trying to get all the existing sites out there to join a common web ring.

I know there are several sites out there that have your club name as part of the name ( rchost.bellairfliers.com) type of thing and I wanted to provide a club or individuals with their own named domain.
I may come up with a proto by the end of the day to see what ya think.

No I'm not referring to rcsites/.... or whatever You too can have

a .com or .ca or whatever site for $30US first year, $80 US 2nd year and no banners or anything. 100MB space. Unlimited email addresses and forwarding and 2GB transfer. Why would anyone want to pay $10/month??
I will say no more.

It is not cost effective unless you get your own server and have lots of clients.

If its $30 for the 1st year and $80 for the second, it makes you wonder what it'll be for the subsequent years...... a bit of a price hike isn't it?

I'm in the third year and it's $80 again. They just want to get you in for the $30 and then it's regular prices. There are others around for $4-6$ a month which look good also. Nobody really needs to be without a site, if they really want one.
Don't know if I should link or not.

Pricing is not so straight forward. The host you reference has nice lead-in pricing, but:

$60 to register a domain name- the going rate seems to be $35-$40... must be re-paid every 2 years???

$50 annually to have your site available to search engines!

I'm investigating this for our club, too, and I'm finding that there is a lot of smoke and mirrors and as many sucker deals as a Las Vegas casino. Demoralizing.

If anyone else has good advise for where to look for straight forward, reasonably priced, reputable web hosting services, I would appreciate references.

Try http://www.123cheapdomains.com for your .com's, etc. It's only $13.95 with them a year... I don't think they do .ca but being a Canadian thing it's gonna cost more than a .com, .net, etc.

George, WreckRman2, AKA David who has posted in this thread runs http://www.indywebdesign.com and offers webhosting. No smoke and mirrors just good webhosting and he is a fellow RC'er as well.

I have both my websites with him and have been very happy with his services

JMHO.

Thanks,
Mark

For those less html savvy check out what Michael from RCA put together.

For clubs you guys could use RC Clubs at http://www.rcclubs.com or for personal stuff they made RC Pilot at http://www.rcpilot.com

If Marc doesn't mind me posting this you can also check out http://www.rcsites.net

It's a free web hosting place for rc clubs and personal web pages. Includes an online editor for those that aren't HTML savy. Kind of the same as rcclubs.com only its free. Then again it doesn't come with templates either.

Sorry I was away for a week. Mulligan. FOR YOUR INFO: You do not have to do any of this through them. You can just host with them. I pay $25CDN for registering .ca domains. I submit to important search engines myself manually. Don't use the service if you don't want to. I was just saying I have and for more than 2 years and it has been good. Many others are probably as good or even better.
