Best RC Field on Long Island
PLEASE SPREAD THE NEWS!!!!
With the support of a New York State Senator and a Township, we have the BEST R/C field on Long Island!
“Long Island Tomcats”
Is a NYS incorporated non-profit organization under section 501(c)(6) and AMA Chartered Club.
Our Core Values:
SAFETY CARING INTEGRITY FUN PASSION
“Any decision I make using the five Values, I know I will make the right decision.”
These are the Values we all share. Each and every member is brought onboard because we embody these five Values. They are the foundation for our culture and the tools we use for all decisions.
SAFETY: It always comes first. We each wear the hat of the Safety Officer. It’s everyone’s job to ensure a safe environment for each other.
CARING: Respect and understanding are the hallmarks of who we are. Caring is what brings us together as an organization.
INTEGRITY: Doing the right thing. It’s the only way to do business, so we communicate openly and honestly. That’s how we earn trust from each other and the public.
FUN: This should be a friendly environment. A place you love. The equation is simple: we enjoy our sport, our members and the public.
PASSION: LI Tomcats is more than just a club. It is an organization of people with dedication and enthusiasm for the hobby and convey that passion to others.

Who cares if you got the best field when you've limited membership to 65 people total - EVER?
Good luck rounding up bodies for the work parties.

I used to live on Long island long ago 1962-1987
I remember back in 1985 they used to let people fly their Rc planes at the polo field in Bethpage. Saw a couple of crashes there LOL

RE: Best RC Field on Long Island
I belong to three clubs---------membership is limited to 100 or less at two of them and 75 at the other.
There is zero difficulty in getting work parties at the fields-------there are none.
Everything is hired out----no grumbling, no hurt feelings about who did what, and minimum time delays when something needs to be done. Dues $75/ year.
All the usual restrictions/requirements AMA Card: AMA flying rules etc. apply.
The restrictions simply mean "of the members, by the members, for the members" and their invited guests.
No exceptions.
No one is left out as there are about 10 other clubs in the geographic area each about ten miles or more from the nearest neighboring club. All but one of those has membership limits----the club with open membership is the one with all the bickering and work party problems.
Over time the membership limits result in a far more homogeneous group than available through open membership. Human nature at work.
We like it and with each club in existence for ten years or longer it apparently works quite well.
A couple of the clubs have second and third fields solely for electric and sail plane and a site solely for the helis.
It is apparent, from the actions within the clubs which have the membership limits, that happiness and decisions for the good of each member are the rule rather than the exception.
I've belonged to both varieties over the years and the membership limit works far better for the good of the club at large than does the open membership variety.

RE: Best RC Field on Long Island
Can't speak for "lazun" but I've never seen a 'kid' show up alone.
Usually they are sponsored by an existing member (might be a friend of the father) but they still are required to have AMA coverage.
Even though radio prices have dropped significantly I would imagine that the budget is well beyond that of most 'lone' kids ---not to mention the transportation problems.
Our fields are as far away from things as we can get them so a car is a necessity.
Therefore there is an adult in the mix some where.
I have NEVER seen a 'wannabe pilot' turned away from ANY club so long as they met the field requirements------young or old; including if they are one flier over the limit.
After they learn to fly ----- then the limit comes into play but generally there is enough turnover that there is 'room' for the following year. The clubs I belong to maintain a 'waiting list' as well.
I have never witnessed a true "newbie" being turned away. Frankly I never expect to.
The "misfits" from other clubs--------that is a different story! Including on the 'waiting list'.

RE: Best RC Field on Long Island
Then all the clubs I belong to or fly with are guilty as we are R/C ONLY!!!!!
That is NO FF, NO CL, NO non R/C-HLG, NO Rockets etc.
Jets only by Waiver and prior approval.
BTW lots of luck finding CL stuff at your LHS.
Even more luck is required to find any kid today who is interested in it.
You --MIGHT-- find some .049 engines.
If you want noise complaints just try CL at your local park, etc. That is a more irritating noise than R/C A/C by a wide margin.

Looking at the maps, it looks like the club has twisted the arms of the folks who own or control the old Grumman facility out near Riverhead.
No, it's not the end of the world, but you can see it from here....
I was born and raised on Long Island (Seaford), 4th Generation.
But I got down here as quick as I could!
(I left in 1968)
So, the big question is ,
"How Much per Year?
I know, If you have to ask the price, you can't afford it.

RE: Best RC Field on Long Island
I'm trying to find a club here on long island to fly with and am getting discouraged at all the limited member clubs to be honest. I've been in the hobby for 20 years and took a 3 year hiatus, having moved to LI during that time. I'm starting to worry I'm not going to be able to find a club to fly with.
And as far as the 11,000 foot runway at calverton, I fly full-scale there and am pretty sure that the rc club never materialized there.
