Default New Years Day Fly In

How many of you try to fly on New Years Day? One of the guys that flys with us said his old club always had a Fly In that day unless the weather was just too bad. Tomorow its going to be cold with wind increasing after lunch time. We are going to try 9:00. I will post some pictures of those that make it. We have one new guy that got a Hobbico 60 trainer for Christmas and we are going to help him through the spring. For tommorow I am going to buddy box him on my son's LT-40.

We're supposed to get between 4-6" tonight. I don't have skis so i won't be flying anything tomorrow. Think I'll go out and fly the slowflyer in the back yard now.

From NWS Corpus Christi, Tx:
"New Year's Day: Sunny, with a high near 57. Windy, with a north northeast wind between 20 and 26 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph."
Don't guess I will get to fly tomorrow.

Five of us flew this morning starting at 2405 hrs. We had lights on the fixed wing stuff while the rotarys stayed under the street lights. Flew for about 15 minutes until the batteries started to sag and then went back in for black eyed peas and more champagne. This has been a tradition for a group of us for the last 15 years.

It's actually Sunday, at 2pm. That was some breeze, huh, Vic? Did you hang around and watch Cody get the "1st flight of '08" in? His 4 Star was wallowing around like a drunk on roller skates. he flew a solo pylon race and tried to land upwind, when he was ten feet up, he pitched nose up about 30 degrees and flew backwards about 40 feet. Had to punch the throttle and go around; almost had it the second time, and the wind pushed a wingtip into the ground and he cartwheeled, tore it up pretty good. It won't make the race next weekend.

Our New Year's Day Pylon race has become a tradition in our club. This is the 4th year; it's usually 4-Star 40's with no airframe mods, limited to a .46 2 stroke or .56 4-stroke. Last year we raced Kyosho warbirds with the same restrictions.

It would have been ok were it not so gusty. I did see Cody fly around a bit. You are right about Sunday, sorry.

I tried to catch up with some friends at the field in Sidney, Maine but I arrived after they left. We had a large snow storm the previous day and one coming this afternoon (it's still Jan 1 here as I type, 7:55 p.m.). I tried to fly my planes on skis, but the snow was too deep and fluffy. My electric Extra 300 and Taylorcraft just could not stay afloat long enough to get up to speed. My Mini-Ultra Stick on floats did great.
The temps were in the high 20's with almost no wind until it started snowing. Looking forward to a great year.

Jay

Oh, and here are couple of short film clips from the day.

My club had new years day glider contest for 20 years ,2006 was the last contest we had as it just got to cold for us old guys to enjoy any more. The only thing that shut down the contest was rain, we flew in heavy wind and snow and one time it was like 18%.
At times you would lose sight of your glider because of the heavy snow fall, I just watched an old video of one of our contest and I can not beleive how cold i looked in the video, good old days maybe not.

Well we went yesturday a 9:00. It was already windy and Suitcase got the first flight in with his Big Boy before the wind really started blowing. 15 -20 from the west with higher gust, a 90 deg crosswind for our field. We did get to break in a new guys 65 LA on his trainer though. I got a wild flight with my electric profile and a US 60. The only crash was a Cap. Wind gut picked up a wing as it broke ground and cartwheeled it to a stop.

In NJ, I managed to get in four flights.. three full tanks, and one short flight. I flew the Goldberg Progege w/OS 75 AX. The wind shifted from almost straight down the runway center line at about 15 kts, to about 20 kts cross. varying but pretty much perpendicular to the flight line. So, I defueled after landing the short flight and went home.

But, I did ring in the new year!! It actually was pretty nice until the wind shifted.

RVator,

Sorry to see the broken CAP, not the greatest way to start the year. I guess if he gets it out of the way now the rest of the year can only get better, right?

Do you fly a full size RV? A friend of mine has a really nice RV-6 (I think) that he built and flies often form the airport in Augusta, Maine. I've had a ride and it's a little rocket ship!

I added a film clip link to my post above.

One of my friends from work that I also fly rc with built a quickbuild RV-6. He was the guy that got me into RC and full scale. I would love to get my ticket on day and I would like to build an RV but with kids in school it will have to wait, its RC only for me now. I picked the name from VansAircrafts monthly newsleter name. I will have to post a picture of John's RV-6.

Cool!

I have been flying full size too for the last three years. I rent from Maine Instrument Flight at the Augusta, Maine airport and fly Beechcraft BE-19 Sports and their Cessna C-172 Skyhawk.

I have included a link to clips form last year when I gave a friend and his daughter a ride.

Here is a picture of my friends RV-6. He sold it a few years ago after he lost his medical due to skin cancer on his head. He got the medical back after 6 months but had to get a letter from his surgeon and a MRI every 6 months to keep it. The FAA let it go to yearly but he had to pay for the MRI at $4800 each time. It added too much to the cost of flying so he sold it got into tractor pulling and back into RC. RV's are great flying planes with good slow flight abilities and fast cruise speed.

Sorry to hear about. That's a tough way to lose your flying ability especially the extra medical costs...bummer! But good that you both found R/C. Great Planes makes a nice 1/4 scale RV-4 if you haven't seen it already. I'm very interested in getting one once I get some funds available.

Here is G-P link. http://www.greatplanes.com/airplanes/gpma1357.html
