RE: Don't Answer Cell Phone While Flying!
Answering your phone while in flight is stupid, but other than that I dont see much of a problem with a cellphone at the field.
What does worry me though is people who smoke in the pits around NITROMETHANE and GASOLINE. People do this at my field from time to time and Im amazed that we never have had a fire. I'm seriously thinking about putting a fire extinguisher in my box this summer.

yeah, i whenever i smoke around my planes the ashes always seem to fall directly into the carbs, especially on the gassers. mounting the engines sideways or inverted helps...

RE: Don't Answer Cell Phone While Flying!
sfaust hit her on the nose... I have seen most planes go in because of a SIMPLE pilot/maint overlook i/e Not thread locking servo horns, not periodicly checking control horns and clevises etc. , and trying to fly on a low Tx or Rx battery (saw that the other day DUH!!)... If you treat them as real aircraft and not toys, they crash VERY SELDOMLY or never... 1 minute of preflight can prevent hours and many $ of rebuilding... Anyhow I know I have sorta changed the subject of a dying thread that many of you want to take out in the pasture and shoot oh well..

Talking on a cell while flying + talking on a cell while driving + smoking near fuel = all are STUPID acts of ignorance each having the potential to hurt or kill.

Some of the problem is called overload, or front end overload. It happens. Somebody mentioned spurs, which absolutely do happen, even with the best of broadcasting equipment. No sense explaining spurs here. Basically, you can overload just about anything. Some people live with overloads and don't recognize what they are, but they deny the existence of them.

Absoultely: you can overload the front end of a receiver. Just look at whta happens to the FM radio on your bench when you turn your transmitter on. With an enormous signal you could probably destroy a transmitter as well. But if that big of a signal were coming from a cell phone you wouldn't want it anywhere near your head.
And what does overloading a front end have to do with someones transmitter being reprogrammed anyway?

I call home regularly from my cell phone while on business, and do ask to talk with my Extra from time to time. So far, no problems.
While driving, I also talk with my passenger while holding a cup of coffee or changing the radio stations. I think I'll go back to just talking on the cell phone while driving since it easier and far safer. I've spilled coffee in my lap far too many times!

Been away from this forum for a long time and just found this thread active again. I would like to apologize to Awesome (in post #83) for my outburst.

I was flying the other day and a guy handed me a coke. I reached out for the coke and the plane started acting funny. I wonder if Coke can cause a plane to crash.

Duct Tape is the answer!!!! I wish the masses of females (<<<<not intended to be chauvanist) that MUST talk and drive would just wrap a few layers of duct tape around their pretty little head with the cell phone in the approximate "ear" position!! Viola!! Instant HANDS FREE!!(Just kidding ladies!!!, you know we all love ya!!)

RE: Gettin Deadly On The Thread!
The ignorance of some of the respondents to this thread is, simply stated, astounding!
Cell phones, placed in close proximity to a computer transmitter, can cause memory loss resulting in channels direction reversals, loss of ATV's, etc......
If you're a non believer just put you transmitter in a microwave oven for a minute or so and see if your settings hold.
Leave engineering to engineers. Why is it that hobbyist, by virtue of using an electronic device, believe themselves to know all about everything that's related to the use of that device?
These types of interference, "Radiated RFI/EMI/EMP" is/are not unique to hobby stuff.
There are those of us that use your tax dollars to assure that military gear aren't susceptible to the same shortfalls in design/shielding.
Argue on, but the fact is this......if you place your cell phone in close proximity to your computer transmitter you risk an inadvertent change in your computer stored information.
That's a fact!
