Default Lone Star Balsa

I stopped by 6-28-10 and bought about $50.00 worth of the salvage balsa. I went strait to the warehouse. I have never seen so much balsa in my life. The owner was there and I sit and talked with him as my order was filled. They really have great prices on the balsa, and these are really friendly fine people that work there. If anyone is looking to buy balsa in my opinion they are the ones to buy from.

All in all I was very impressed with the service, and hospitality.

Yes, it was a long ways from home. I had been to AZ to visit my daughters there. They are thing about relocating to the Dallas area and I was checking out the area. It is a little winder there than I like but no more so than the part of Ohio where I live. Because I was going to be in the area I decided to stock up on some balsa. Now instead of having enough wood to build 7 or eight planes I have enough to build 12 to 15 planes. I mostly fly smaller planes. Now I have more Balsa in my shop than most hobby shops have. and for about 20% to 25% of what it would have cost at the local hobby shop.

I believe it is the balsa that was saved after the fire a few years back. I think they cut off the burnt ends and as such the wood may not be as wide or as long as stock balsa. Hope this helps, Dave

Salvage Balsa is balsa that was burned in the fire. You will notice it is only about 2 7/8 inch wide to a little more than 3 inch for the 30" salvage balsa, and maybe less than the normal length. that was the balsa I bought. It is slightly random in size so if you want every sheet tha same size buy the regular balsa. But if exact size is not that important to you the salvage balsa is a good deal.

I have posted a picture of the salvage balsa I bought. The 30" was 35 sheets 1/16 as you see posted. I also bought a lot of other sizes and lengths. As best I can remember these were the 30" x 1/16/" x 3" The width is from 2 7/8" to 3 1/4" wide the length of balsa for the 30 and shorter balsa was an average of about 29 7/8" one sheet was 31 1/4 " long the thickness is uniform to the thickness you order.

They slice the sheets with an industrial band saw to the width and then sand them to the exact with you specify. I have a band saw, and table saw so for me it is no bid deal.

I'm a member of LCRC Lorain County RC Club in Elyria. I doubt that I will be going back any time soon, however if my daughters end up moving to that area, then I might go twice a year or more.

Now that I'm getting back into RC flying I'm looking for sources of building materials. I've looked over the Lonestar Balsa site and like what I see. Good prices and good selection - and they're Texans! Gotta admit a bit of bias there, since I'm a native Texan myself.

I miss Superior Balsa. Some one mentioned to me that one of the many issues that hurt their business was that all of us locals picking through the cream, left their mail order product of lesser quality. From the pictures I have seen of Lone Star, Superior wasn't even half their size.
