Default C/L speed videos?

Hi folks,

I wold love to see some more video of C/L speed flying, esp. C or D speed and jet. I saw one jet video posted somewhere, and also the FAI world speed record video from the UK a little while back. There is little activity within a reasonable distance of where I am, so I'd like to see some video action if possible, to sate my curiosity.

Thanks,

MJD

For those who haven't seen that world FAI record being set, here's the link.

Yeah, when it finally gets on the pipe and jumps to 35k or so, it's definitely dramatic. During takeoff and the first few laps the engine sounds no more high strung than a sport engine.

I got a real laugh about some of the comments way back when this was first posted, as in "whoopee, it flies real fast in a circle, so what?" and "it's not even flying, it's just centrifugal force" etc etc. I'd like to see those folks build a 208 mph .15 powered C/L aircraft themselves. Besides, I calculated the speed at which centrigual force is sufficient to lift the aircraft off the ground, and it works out to, if I recall correctly, about 115-118 mph. That aircraft was in the air long before it got to that speed, so I think it is safe to say it does indeed fly.

There is a video worth checking out for giggles on YouTube, showing a 200 mph tether car. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1YYfwaiQBA

Same deal, whipping to get moving, a few laps to accelerate then all hell breaks loose.

Also - for an example of how low in the genetic cesspool the majority of YouTube commenters are, simply scroll through the comments about this video. And I thought Usenet groups were low on the scale - they look like think tanks in comparison.

I just did some playing around with the sound track from that FAI flight with a program I've got that's usually used for music. By selecting tiny segments at different times I could see the individual firing impulses. About 10 seconds into the video just after the engine is started it gives a quick peak then drops to a very low rev which seemed to be about 4000. But it was 4 stroking like crazy so who knows, it might have been 8000 . On release it was doing 15700 then in flight while it was being whipped it went to 18000. Then there's the sudden jump when the pipe came on and from then on it got harder to know the real revs. I tried to pick a point where it was on the far side of the circle from the mic and found 38700. I wasn't going to spend all day checking the revs for an entire lap but I tried picking the two points where the revs (pitch) sounded the highest and lowest because of Doppler shift. The lowest rev I found was 30600 and the highest was 40800 so taking an average it would seem it was running at 35700 which is very close to the 35000 they said.

There was some footage of Luis Paramon and others on the net at one point - can't find them now though - anyone else know where they can be found?
