Actually depends on how much wood you want... because the craft folks like firm or hard balsa I have found some remarkable 4-6 pound wood at large craft stores. I tag along with my wife when she goes for scrapbooking supplies and check out the balsa rack... and usually snag a couple pieces of nice wood. I do always buy in advance of need... and could probably build planes for years without any new wood being purchased.

I have been doing the same with the wife but the balsa i find at the craft stores seems to be very soft.

Don't forget, in addition to weight you want to make sure the grain is as straight as possible (paralleling the length of the sheet) and of various grains (A, B, and C).

I have been using National Balsa for the last couple of years and am very satisfied with the wood and the service. However, I do not order online. I call in my order so they know exactly what I want. I normally request "contest" grade wood and have always got just what I asked for. I have about 200 sheets of their wood in my shop at this time.
