All sheet Trainer/Stunt for OS .099 PET
Short story, a friend of mine bought a flying box from a retired modeler and the box included among other stuff an OS 09 engine.
Now we're looking for a plane to match, simple construction and easy to repair since we only flew .049 powered control liners. I have seen 2 options Stuntman 23 or the Stunt Chimp. (they both look very similar) Do you think the OS .09 is too much for them ? Thanks. Claudio |
I flew an OS pet 099 many years ago. I designed a profile with built up stunt wing and flaps. It flew very well. If I recall wingspan was about 30 in. I think I would scale up one of the airplanes mentioned to about 30 in wingspan and it should work fine.

I had a Pet .099 in the late 60's. It was in a plane about the size of the one Jim mention. Way enough power, never cared for the motor though and traded it away.

I built a Stuntman 23 with a Fox 09 and it flew adequately but not spectacularly for lack of 09 type power. I had at least 2 of the pet 09's when I was young and they were new engines. They are not powerhouses and can be difficult to start at times but I enjoyed them. Why not, I was young enough to enjoy just about everything about models. make sure that you use a fuel with enough oil in them or they will overheat.

I was just thinking about a plan from Model Builder 1994, Ambush .15 All 1/4" sheet balsa, 37" span. It may be a little big or heavy for an old .099, but could be made with 3/16" or FFF foam or something. I could maybe scan it if you are interested.

The OP didn't specify a Pet, just said OS .09. Some of the later ones are good little motors and don't want for power.
A good little trainer in all sheet is the Winjeel. It can be downloaded from the Hip Pocket Plans gallery. I built one for a Cipolla 09, and it's a real nice flying model well suited to training new fliers. |

I couldn't find the Winjeel real quick like, so I will put the Ambush in. I would personally not use a plastic motor mount, but the conventional maple and plywood engine bearers. There are more pages of instructions, but it is pretty basic, and a lot of it is the history of the .049 size one.

As far as the OP, I would think an .09 may be a bit big for the Stuntman 23 at 109 sq. in. Long lines could make up for it I guess. The Stunt Monkey is kind of hard to find on Google. Lots of cool motorcycle monkey videos there. Does the Hip Pocket site want money or info , or just want you to register to keep things clean? I have checked there before, but don't like getting too far into things I am not sure about.

Plans cover FF, CL and RC models. Are arranged by model co. designer and preferred activity. Ratz, the moderator, runs a good ship. Even to the point of checking whether a plan is subject to copyright before he will publish on his site. Altogether a highly recommended resource. |
I think I have 50 planes in the basement, but will have to check it out more thoroughly I guess, and get some more ink for the printer.

I have an account on Hip Pocket website and I´´l check the plans you mention. Furthermore, my friend is cutting a scaled up plan on foam reinforced with wood on critical spots.. I found "Suls Record Trainer" plan in outerzone for a 1.5 cc diesel. Claudio |

The first Pet .09's came out about ~1958 and had steel cylinder & fins and a smooth top aluminum head. The cylinder was held on with two screws, fore and aft.
The next iteration had four screws. I believe the next one was the Pet-II. The next version has a drop-in liner. All ran well in their day. For a few bucks more you could get an OS .10 which was a notch better. I think the first Pets were ~$4.95. Here is a pic with a Pet-II with the engine mounts cut off (before I got it)...note the Champion glow plug in the upper left. Upper right is an OS .10. The three on the bottom are the final versions with the drop-in liner. They are baffled engines but you must remove the head to see it because they have a step-down baffle. If you are looking for a kit plane, a Flying Clown from Brodak or a SIG Akromaster (if you can get one) would do nicely. Fly on 42' x .012 lines and use 15%-25% nitro fuel. As someone mentioned, if you use RC fuel add enough castor to have 20%-22% lube. Since it has already been run I would suggest all-castor lube. Good luck. George |
Can anyone who has some actual experience with these motors suggest propellers and RPM settings? I have a couple that I would really like to fly but I am hesitant due to lack of instructions.
Also there is one suggestion for 15-25% nitro, does anyone disagree with that? 10% is not enough? 25% is not too much? Just checking. Also Hip Pocket Aeronautics ROCKS! I have been visiting that site for a very long time: READING everything, DOWNLOADING way too much but in addition to plans they have a huge selection of BOOKS. I think mostly because they have a free flight slant and a heavy scale contingent so they have Squadron Publications and similar reference materials about every airplane known to man. And then they also have scans of DECALS. And articles. And lots more. End of unsolicited plug... Paul |
