I has maked Phantom and there are not much parts to make Phantom ready to fly. Maked the cowling of Heineken beer can. :D I has tried ED Bee at bench running, not satisfied cause too short running time. Then i installed the D-A Satelite 1 cc at nose + an extra bigger tank. Checked the centre gravity, all are ok.

Now we have to have a race between the Aussie beer can cowling and the Heineken cowling. :D

Hi John, where ya been? If you make a mistake cutting out the alum. cowl and ruin it, you've no choice but to drink another can.
Jens, that's looking great, well done, you'll soon be in the air...........John

Tom Jolley had a Senior Monitor on ignition at the Vintage Stunt contest in 1999 (maybe) He won OTS Ignition. He had Aeromodeller plans, published much later. I don't know if the Junior Monitor plans were ever published or if one would have to do with kit plans.

I's been a-lurkin! :) These Mites are cute as anything but I reckon a man could become an alky cutting out the cowls. [&:]

Aeromodelling has many bonus spin offs.

Now are my airplane "Phantom" ready to fly. The engine are a D-A Satellit 1 cc + big tank (same picture as in my avatar). :D

The E-D Bee has to small fuelank (too short flytime) [:o], therefore i am using the D-A engine..

Hi Jens, you've done a good job on the Phantom, I bet it'll fly great. You're gonna have some fun with that one........when's the test flight?.......John

Hi, yesterday i flew Phantom in air, really fun to fly by wire.. :D I am using dacron fishing line for 20 lb and works well... The airplane are well designed against hard landing ,and there are no signs of damage.. here are some picture..

Thats great Jens, I'm glad everything went well, nice pictures too. Looks like you had plenty of helpers. Did you get the "dizzies" on the short lines?.........John

No, do i not get "dizzies" [sm=spinnyeyes.gif], all are well. Before Phantom, i had the Cox Piper Commanche and flew in 7 year in each summer.:)

But i has a question about power/propellersize.
Will it be possible to make loop with 1.5 cc (0.10) dieselengine and which propeller are best to make more fast, possible to climb vertical to example wing-over?
I has OS MAX 10 FP converted as dieselengine as here who i did: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_4053416/tm.htm

I flew a bigger airplane with an AM 10 diesel. I used a Cox grey 8 x 4 and had no trouble looping it . I also flew it with an Italian 7 x 3.5 nylon prop which also worked OK. So I would say try a 7 x 4 to 8 x 4. Be careful, you don't have a whole lot of wing there.

Hi Jens, my Phantom was originally powered by a PAW 1.5 and was very fast on 35' lines. I did wing overs with this set up. I did not attempt any loops at this stage. I used a Taipan white nylon 7X6 prop which are a little flexible and do not break in "rough" landings. I created a Super Phantom with an early steel finned unmuffled OS .15 glow engine fitted. Being considerably lighter than the 1.5 PAW the C.G. moved back a bit and the model would glide very nicely when the engine stopped, 3 point landings became possible instead of the nose heavy controlled crash with the PAW. I also added some out thrust and a small weight ( a 20 cent coin ) under the stb. wing tip. I flew this version on 55' lines and had many enjoyable flights and smooth landings. I looped the plane only twice on the long lines but it was not happy about doing aerobatics. I think the thin sheet flat bottomed and dihedralled wing makes it unsuitable for aerobatics. It will reluctantly loop, but is definitely non- aerobatic. The tail plane eventually came off in flight and the Phantom crashed. I plan on building another .15 powered version to fly on the 55' lines. The smaller DC Merlin powered Phantom Mite is still intact and I like to fly it on 35' lines when theres no breeze. I use a 6x6 prop on the Merlin.
The new home for the OS.15 is this Spitfire MK IX Stunter. 36" span, I'll start another thread when its finished and flying.........John

Hi Dave, looking good, dust it off and fire it up, I'm sure there are many mothballed Phantoms waiting to be re-born. Inexpensive fun. Please post some pics if you decide to fly it..........John

Is that a PAW 1.49 in your Phantom Mite?

RE: Keil Kraft Phantom Mite

Hi all,
thanks for the interest in the old 'ntom. Yup, thats a PAW 1.49 on the nose, a squirt of fuel, half a dozen flicks and away we go. I also found a 70' reel of l/w laystrate but no handle :^( guess what the current construction project is. I won't get it flying this weekend as I'll be out grooving my Harmon Rocket III (see separate thread) around the sky (weather permitting!) pics or a small video will be no problem once she's committing aviation! I'm thinking of re-painting the 'ntom as it was built in '83 and has suffered a little hangar rash since she last flew in about '85, the original tissue and silver dope have definitely seen better days.

Hi

I learned to fly with a KK Phantom way back in '56 with a Mills 1.3 up front. We lived in a town called Kitwe in Northern Rhodesia (Zambia now) in Central Africa. Terylene lines and all! Mine was doped tred if I remember correctly.

When the plan for Aldrifge's Peacemaker came out ij Aeromodeller (january '58 I think?) we all built them (I built them and sold them to finance my modelling) We'd fly most afternoons after school using Brit diesels and of course we brewed our own fuel. Motors were things like the AM 25, Frog 2.49, ED Racer and the PAW 2.49. Later I put a Cox Olympic in one, the plane I first managed the clover with.

Ah, those were the days! I built a Peacemaker last year but I get a bit dizzy when flying it - PAW 2.49 (yes, THAT old one) and a 9x4 on 50' lines. Old age is a bugger!

I'd use the Cox but can't figure out a muffler and the sound without one would drive them berserk here in the UK (but music to my ears) ;)

First rule of instructing an autistic son, make sure all aspects are covered!
Took the phantom out tonight for it's first flight for many years, fuelled up and asked son to launch it.... "just throw it straight out like throwing a dart" ran to the handle and tried the controls - OK, "OK son throw it now"......

.....straight at me!

Shouldn't take too much fixing, repair fuselage sides, glue wings back on and repair elevator, aah well! you win some you lose some etc.

Too bad Dave. You have my sympathy, I crashed one today also, but it was all my fault, I'll need to glue a few bits back together as well.
Great that aeromodelling is a hobby we can share and spend time with our kids. ( and grandkids ).........John
