You know what ? It's quiet in here!

So.......here's some shots of one of my more dinky control liners, the Areomodeller GeeBee. I never flew it, mainly because it weighs a ton and is also nose heavy. Grass field flying here and I doubt I would get it of the ground. Os Pet 099. Wingspan, 17.5 inches.

I intend to add some more pictures as I go, sort of a scrap album, if no one minds. Please feel free to add to the thread. The dinkier the better, you know, Musciano/Scientific logs, Aeromodeller oddities, that sort of thing............. :D

Well Luke, here goes:

Two Scientific (Musciano) hollow log Little Bipes. The white/red one is powered by an old Cox Babe Bee, and the yellow one is powered by an Anderson Spitzy .045. Note the ancient wood prop on the Spitzy.

I love a well proportioned stunter with good paint job, adore scale models but for some odd reason the quirky little toy-like models have an appeal of their own. Simple to build from the scrap box too. It's something you don't see much of these days.

Everything is either plastic coated or ARF. Meh [:'(]

Work in progress. Dick Sarpolus Flip and Nobler. These two are for some potentially fast production Cox engines I have. They were designed for Tee Dees or Black Widows but I think the std reedies might just pull it of, with some mods.

Approx. wingspan 27 inches.

Another work in progress, Walt Musciano's diminutive Wedell Williams racer for OK Cub B. Engine bearers yet to be fitted. Wingspan is 16.5 inches.:D

George, if you happen to view this then the cub to the left is the one I was trying to identify some time back in the 1/2 A forum. A new old stock Cub 049 with kaysun prop and weird "startup pulley"on the nose.

The Cub on the left was just referred to as the "OK Cub". Its displacement is .049, although it does not say so like the later engines. They also made an .074 version, but it has .074 stamped on the bottom of the crankcase. The tanks, by the way, were for FF.

My first engine powered model was a Scientific Little Bipe, powered by an OK Cub. It got a few laps on that small tank. BTW, I did not build that first Little Bipe, I traded my BB gun for it, ready to fly.

My first Cub .049B had the type string starter you show on the OK Cub, but it was fitted behind the prop and facing the other direction. It came on a Comet Sabre44.

As to the reedie. When Dick Sarpolus designed most of those planes, I think all the current reedies except the Black Widow used single bypass porting and a low compression glow head, so they put out much less power than the BW.

Good info George. I might have a yarn with Walt, his book Flying Scale Models got me past the "buy a kit and crash it"stage. I have scratch built from plans ever since I read it. Not that the plans in the book were the best, but it gave me the incentive.

Now George, I hope that was a worn out BB gun you traded. One does not give away BB guns for just anything . ;)

I was about 13, a little past the BB gun stage. The gun itself, although well used, was in excellent condition. It was a Daisy "Defender" model with a nylon stock that had a storage place for BBs in the stock...besides, I had moved back to the city where it was unlawful to shoot a BB gun within city limits.

I had built solid and plastic models for years (and even a rubber powered stick model). Time to move on to powered models.

That's how I started too, plastic models, until I heard this wow,wow, wow sound in the distance. A group of control liners flying in a park about 2 miles away. Mind blowing for a child, grown men with models that actually flew. I was hooked.

My folks bought me an OK Cub 049 for my 13th birthday, we were passing through Johannesburg in early 1956 on our way to Kitwe, Northern Rhodesia. It came all in bits and you had to assemble it youself.

I must admit I can't remember it ever actually RUNNING! That didn't happen until I saved my pocket money and bought a Mills 1.3 diesel mail order from UK. That was the motor that started it all for me.

I meant to reply to this George, thanks for the tip. The way your starter is set up makes more sense. I really like the look of Cub B's , I just wish they had more compression.

Walt Musciano's Bellanca for 09 engines, 32.5 inch wingspan. This is one of those models that I keep building on and off. One day it will be finished, I'm sure.

Not quite a dinky model, but it is somewhat ugly. Dick Mathis Coyote. An incredibly good flyer, no flaps. Most of Dick's designs are cool in my opinion. This thing could turn very tight loops which led to it's demise.

Nice looking planes. Come to think of it, I have a set of Bellanca plans. If I remember correctly there are two versions shown on the plan. It's on my very long to-do list. ;)

What engine are you going to put in it? Those Pet .09's are nice. I've had a few along the way, starting with the original two headbolt versions. I think they retailed for $4.95. Interesting way to design a baffle. Has a step down on the transfer port side of the piston. The only ones I own now are a Pet-II that is only one step above junk, and two (or three) of the last version, in excellent condition.

Of course, if you want to maintain Walt's flavor you might go for a Cub .09 or a Cub .14.

Can't wait to see it finished.

It has been fitted for an Enya 09, one of the nicest 09s in it's day. Unfortunately I had to put the engine on the "wrong" side of the model otherwise the muffler would have protruded into the windscreen. What I really should have done was simply mount the engine inverted. I never quite understood why Enya chose to place the muffler on the other side . I have an OK Cub 09 and a 14, but no easy way of muffling them or I would have definitely used either. I fly in public parks, which in my city is illegal, but I have never been caught. People get so snakey about noise these days.

Oh, and yes, there are two versions on the plan. The LG on both is not an easy task.

The plane in the first post looks like it's the same as I built a while ago.
I'm not sure if I used the Aeromodeller's plan (........that's before I started to change things ;) )

BTW the pipe is to get the CG in the right place :D

Don't know which Enya .09 you have but the Enya .09-IV has the exhaust placed on the other side from previous versions.

Supagloo, how well does it fly ? BTW, isn't that one of those UCTKAM 1.5's on the nose ? They can reach 22,000 rpm or more, with a pipe and the correct prop!


George, all of mine have the exhaust on the right hand side if you face the engine. Not the norm compared to most other engines. Mounted on a profile the muffler sticks up instead of hanging down. Fine little engines.

What, do you Guy`s consider DINKY ?? A wingspan ,and ,length,of your models ,would be nice to know too...It`s hard to judge, how BIG/small these planes are..Dave
