Which engine???
 

I just purchased a set of Walter Musciano plans for the Beechcraft Staggerwing and wanted to know which engine to use? The plans call for a .15 to .25 engine...........and I was thinking of buying a new Fox .25BB Schneurle CL engine, would that be a good engine or too much for the airplane? Any other suggestions would be welcomed and appreciated thanks!!! [8D]

Although I have never seen those plans, I would suggest something around .10 or .15. When Walt Designed those planes, he used engines like OK Cub, McCoy sport, etc. that were not noted for power. What engine options does it show on the plans.

Although the Fox .25BB schnuerle is an excellent engine, it may be too heavy and powerful for that plane. I am assuming you are using it as a sport/scale ship. If it is for racing, it should be fine.

Sounds like it would be perfect for one of the older non-schneurle .19 engines such a Fox, K&B greenhead, Veco plain-bearing, McCoy Sportsman or Testors-McCoy lightning bolt case. You can pick them up for peanuts on auctions or classified ads and they are wonderful engines.

A new OS Max .15 -- .19 LA should be fine. If all you can find is the RC version, just wire the carb open. They're pretty common at local hobby shops and won't have the need for castor lube the older stuff often does.

I'm old school - I'd go with a vintage engine...just...because.

Well, sure....you can go with a new engine, anyone can.

I was thinking, since you are working from Walter Musciano plans; why not go nostalgia all the way and live the experience the way Walt did.

You can find brand-new condition engines from the '50's and '60's on ebay, so this would give you the chance to see why so many of us old geezers would rather use older engines we had from the times when DDE and JFK were presidents.

For me, it's simple; old design, old engine.

If make of engine is not a concern then consider the older OS or Enya 15's and 19's as suitabe power plants.
